I rather disliked Gilbert and Sullivan myself until the summer I turned 17 and watched all of HMS Pinafore in an outdoor performance in Boston. The whole was far more than the separate parts and... m Everybody should study G&S I saw many D'Oyly Carte productions in the 80's Great tunes, humour etc My favourite is the Mikado Elliptical billiard balls etc....!! The senior pupils at my secondary school always put on a G&S show at the end of year. For my final year we put on 'The Mikado'. That's when I really began to understand them. As far as apparently non sequitur lyrics are concerned, here's one verse written soon after Irving Berlin hit 100 as a "cowboy" song. "I started those fillies at the pens this mornin' You know the buckskin and the bay, Before the wind started blowin' too hard At the mid part of the day, The driest spring in ninety-one years The radio played on. Said, Irving Berlin is hundred years old today The wind's gone and blown my woman away." Me, I think sometimes a non sequitur lyric says more than something more directly expositional.
