millertime
I need to make an adjustment with the truss rod and upon removing the cover and noticing the truss rod, I can not see a hex end and wondering what tool is needed to adjust the truss rod. I have made plenty of truss rod adjustment in the past on my P/J basses and Guilds, this is the first time I have seen the end of the truss rod that does not have a visible female hex end to insert the wrench. Any info on this.....?
Golem
` It is not unusual for a Gibson product to have a male hex on the rod. Hmmnmnn, is it OK to say that in 'family' forum ? I just checked the nearest-to-hand Epi, and it uses a 5/32 allen wrench, so I'm NOT suggesting there's a whole lot of consistency, especially with offshore products. But hex socket wrenches for adjustment of truss rods are not all that unusual. AllParts stocks four different sizes [2 metric, 2 SAE]. I've seen male hex fittings on truss rods from Gibby, Yamaha, Peavey ... AllParts doesn't MAKE wrenches, just sells them. And they are not a "Matched set of Four". They vary .... black, silver, with a phillips screw driver tip on the handle, or not. If you're in a shop with a mixed bunch of these little wrenches, the one for Gibby is almost always the black one with the phillips tip on the handle, cuz AllParts gets it from the same supplier as Gibby does. Gibby doesn't make tools either. OTOH, is there good reason to bleeb an Epi T-Bird will have the same fitting as a USA Gibby bass ? Nooooo .... I mean, it would be way cool, 'all-in-the-family' cool, but don't assume it to be the case. East is East and West is West, as Rudy said. `
millertime
Here is what I am looking at, as you can see there is no hex pattern to insert the hex wrench into as it is all round..? This is a 5 month old bass and I have not touched the truss rod previously.... Any suggestions..?
Golem
` Looks to me like a female hex fitting. It also looks like a dual action truss rod. Dual action rods have that round collar with a hex fitting slightly recessed into the collar. Dual is cool. Google for the details of "Dual action truss rod". Add the terms "neck" and "adjustment" to your search. I spoze you'd wanna "minus out" the term "Chiropractic" ! `
