Hogeye
I was curious as well and asked a guy in the Gibson marketing dept. several years ago. It seems that Gibson was dealing with the Robert Johnson Estate for the right to use his name on an L-1 reissue. They couldn't get together on a deal so Gibson just dropped out. They were already in production with the guitars so they just used the name "Estate" sort of /kind of tweaking the folks that run the Johnson Estate and trying to let some of the more knowledgeable customers know what the intent was. The Johnson Estate shopped the name around and they ended up with the Korean company Samick (sp?) as the builder of the reissue guitar. Marketing types don't you know. I will say that it was pretty amusing to see a Korean guitar with the name of Robert Johnson on it. The Korean guitar was a nice guitar but no one bought into the premise that it was the reissue of the guitar used by Robert Johnson.. The guitar for sale is the real deal Gibson and it was only around for a short time. The Gibson L-1 is what it is no matter what name they put on it. TommyK
It's possible the family wanted a guitar that was more affordable for the younger crowd. Sadly, the younger crowd probably went, "Who is Robert Johnson?"
