If you knock at it with a scewdriver and it sounds open and bright it is aluminium, if it sounds dull it's probably nickel. Or you take it off and you will know immediately :-) A good moment for changing strings as well... Sound improvement is relative: My Les Paul Standard did not that much, my Flying V did a lot.
