Rhythm Guitar

Hi Guys,

Thought I should join the forum to learn more about this amazing brand of guitar...for me the best! Anyway I am a returning guitar player who used to play a lot during my younger years but now decided to play again when my friends put up this band called MIDLIFE CRISIS. Of course the name describes the members of the band who are in our 40's. We play 70's and 80's light rock and a little folk. I do the rhythm and use an ES 335 1959 DOT reissue Ebony color. I love this guitar so much!

For the professionals in the forum, can you pls advise me of a gibson model to be used as a RHYTHM guitar... Is the ES 335 up to it or an LP?

Would appreciate any comments based on your experience.

Thanks and glad to be part of the forum

Enchong,

First of all, welcome to the forum, AND welcome back to the wonderful world of guitar. beer.gif

Secondly, I think you already own a guitar that will get the job done! A les Paul would do it as well, and if you're looking for an excuse to buy one, you probably won't find too many people here who will talk you out of it, least of all me. lol.gif

However, your current guitar is a fine choice for the job. thumbup.gif

Thanks for the welcome!!! You're right I am just itchying for an LP hehehehe... I saw a 57 LP Black Beauty on the net and my God its my dream guitar I think....of course i would want to be able to play it first before I put in good money($4600) on it. Have you had experience playing this guitar? Where is the best place to buy it in the US except in the internet where you don't really touch it.

Thanks again

Here's the thing. There really is no such thing as a "lead guitar" model vs. a "rhythm guitar model" because its all about the style of playing and process, not the instrument. You can ask Chuck Berry how an ES model works for rhythm, he's the king of rhythm and riffs. Bob Weir from Grateful Dead played a 335 for many years and he is really a rhythm guitarist more than anything, not a lead player by any stretch of the imagination. So love what ya got, play what ya got, and rock on.

Pleased to meet you and welcome to the forum.. You have a nice

axe to start with... I would look at a nice LP myself. The Studio

edition is nice and the price is good. I have one and I'm very

happy with it.

Yes, I've played quite a few 57 Customs. They're extraordinary guitars, IMHO. I'm somewhat of a P90 freak, so I'd be lookin' at the 54 Custom myself.

As far as where to buy? If you're going to count out "online" purchase, then you're probably going to have to order one from your local guitar shop.

Hey...I'm 18 and I play Rhythm guitar in my school band and also in a small band with my friends..(We mainly play punk Rock, Folk, Country and Classic Rock). I borrow our lead vocalist's ES 335 or 339 if I want a slightly deeper tone....

Hope you don't mind advice from an 18 year old...but keep rocking with that 335 of yours sir...you don't need to go for another

Welcome to the forum. You cant' have a mid life crisis without buying a Les Paul.

I am 58 and still having Mid Life Crisis, I got a new LP last week. I am kind of like you, played in my youth and did several bands. I had to quit and raise a family. Now I am back to playing and using the grandkids as the excuse to pick up new gear.

A wildcard suggestion coming up, if you will

To complement the delightful ES 335

Purchase an ES 330

A characterful guitar with many aficionados hereon

A Casino clone to boot

Terrific for rhythm

Ask The Beatles and Paul Weller....

I love this thread! But really the guy has probably already figured it out since the thread started in 2008 and was recently resurrected.

The question on what is a rhythm guitar or a lead instrument is an interesting one. Personally from my own experience what works for one person doesn't work for another. I can't seem to get a really strong rhythm sound out the Les Paul I play, but for lead it's just stellar! The 225 I play however is fantastic for both. The Tele I have sounds terrible no matter what I play...but a friend of mine picks it up and it just sings! My dad's acoustic 12 string sounds awesome as a rhythm guitar (an absolute canon!!!) but terrible as a lead instrument...however Leo Kottke does things that are unnatural on the same model 12 string. Guitars are weird but the ability of the musician to connect with an instrument and evoke the emotion that can transcend him or herself is what makes the instrument work for the music.

ES 335 is versatile to play any type of music and tweaking can sound much like any type of guitar...even a single coil pickup.

Admit to it! We all want more than one guitar...ha ha ha. Welcome to your support group and get another LP! Life is too short; and please post a picture... so I can drool and have my "fix".

Your "best" guitar is your next guitar! [biggrin]
