I have an LP studio faded in cherry and was thinking about painting the body with black automotive primer for an industrial look, while leaving the neck alone. You should clean it very good with naptha before painting it. Also....a very very light sanding with 1500 grit sand paper wont remove finish, but will scratch it microscopically enough to allow paint to adhere well. That's the right way to do it.
