RC Cline
I recently bought a 2nd (or maybe 3rd) hand Epi. SG Special. It's a decent little guitar but could do with a tune up for sure. My question...someone has removed the serial number decal on the neck/head, is there anywhere else on it that hides another way to determine when and where it was born? Thanks, RC BTW, I'm really digging this forum!!!
sparquelito
If you remove the neck from the guitar, you may find the year of manufacture (of the neck anyway) penciled in on the root end of the maple. There are four phillips-head screws that you remove from the square chrome plate on the back of the guitar, where the neck is inserted into the body. There's no guarantee that you will find the neck builders initials there, but that is a common practice.
RobinTheHood
The serial number should be on the neck plate. The Specials werent around back when Epiphone was using decals for the serial numbers. That practice ended in the mid 1990's. Are you sure its a Special? Pics? Jon S.
Yep. If the neck plate is original there is a good chance the serial number is stamped on it.
