  1. Thanks for the replies. At this point it is learned helplessness but having a top notch J 200 to play makes life so much better. I tried to upload a better picture of the quilt. The size limit of photos is difficult to work with. I even read the work arounds (imgur, etc.) and still can't get it work correctly.

  2. This is a bit cathartic so please bear with me while I tell this story. After losing everything including all of my guitars on November 9th, 2018 in the Southern California Woolsey Fire, I decided to hold out on guitar replacements because I wanted to save everything possible to build a new house. Just (finally) got permission to build a new house last week after so many agonizing and infuriating delays. Hopefully a new house this time next year.

I decided to buy one replacement from insurance.

The morning of November 9th my wife and I were in San Diego at a conference for her clinic and when we found out that people were being evacuated for a fire in the area around our house we called her father, who was living with us at the time (believe it or not he lost his house exactly a year before in the Sylmar fire),  and asked him to get our passports and I asked him to get my prized 5 star quilt J-200. He had no idea how to figure out which one was it and I was kidding anyway thinking that once again, nothing would happen. He told us that well I see some smoke but nothing else, should be ok. I had only my clothes for a 2 day trip and my laptop with me and we were in my wife's car. Her father texted 2 hours later and said, "Phillip's car is on fire. The house is burning and I can't get in." We texted, "GET OUT and GET BRYNN!!!". Brynn is our dog. He left right then and drove alone with Brynn down PCH in the thick of it. He got Brynn, the only irreplaceplacable thing. Screw the passports and anything else. The 2 people that died in the fire were a mile from our house on Mulholland drive at the same time.

I've been given 4 very special guitars by my colleagues since the fire: A Gibson Made to Measure Custom Gold Top  Les Paul (that I designed), a Stratocaster Elite, a Telecaster Elite, and an MIM Strat with Fender Custom Shop Vintage 65 pickups in it. I saw a 5 Star quilt 2008 J-200 on Reverb, one of 26, with a certificate signed by Ren Ferguson. The one that I had that burned had a thin neck. This one was described as having a thin neck. I had to have it. It was owned, for investment purposes, by a "Physician who doesn't play." Well I am a physician that "does play." So there you have it.

  3. Beware of Mr. Baker was great, agree. What a character. I figured he might outlive Keith Richards. Sad news. R.I.P.

When I log onto the forum I am now afraid to open any thread that is headed by someone's name. Rather be like an ostrich and delay it.

  4. So I listened to it with good headphones while taking a walk (a quiet walk around the lake). The original songs are listed as "2019 mix". I thought that I wouldn't be able to hear a difference honestly but I was wrong. You can really hear a difference. I think in part because of optimizing compression amongst other digital advancements in the last 50 years. The harmonies stand out, the lead vocals in general stand out more, the guitar fills, the drums, overall really different. I wondered how good Giles could really be (wouldn't it be nice to have George Martin as your father) but I think he did an incredible job. The guitar fills on "She came in through the bathroom window" are brilliant and you hear them a bit differently. I am assuming they are George, he had really come into his own.

I really enjoyed the whole experience. I'd like to know if anyone else hears that or is it my mind and ears playing tricks on me.

And it has become No.1 selling album  in the UK again, 50 years after 1st release.   [thumbup]

That is unbelievable. Has anyone ever matched that feat?

I know Bohemian Rhapsody was #1 twice but not with a 50 year spread. I guess we'll have to wait and see in 2025 or so, maybe 3 times a charm.

  6. Giles Martin had a go and this was released September 26th for the 50th. Always been my favorite Beatles album.

After the remixed versions of the takes that were on the album there are a bunch of studio takes that didn't make it - mostly run up takes. Also chatter between them. I typically don't like listening to that stuff (the chatter) except maybe once to see how they behaved in a typical studio situation. I discovered a mondegreen in You Never Give Me Your Money when Paul announciated better than on the album.

    Any jobber got the sack
    Monday morning, turning back
Yellow lorry slow, nowhere to go. I always thought it was Yellow Doris Oh, nowhere to go. Kind of embarrassing. We don't use the term Lorry stateside although I should have thought that if it doesn't make sense maybe it is something colloquial.

There is a version of Come and Get It that's really good. There's a recording of John trying to decide whether to use a loud take or soft take of I want You/ She's so heavy that is interesting (my least favorite song on the album).  Also another take of Here Comes the Sun that is really good. You hear his picking of the notes clearer somehow (at least I think I do). There another version of Something and also just the strings for Something. Brilliant.

  7. Tragedy today. I posted the photo of the B 24 from the Collings collection earlier in this thread. Their B 17 which was one of the most popular planes they had and was constantly flying giving rides to the public crashed today in New England. Fatalities including people who paid to ride. This was it when it was down in Torrance. Absolutely terrible.

  8. Great stuff. I too like serendipitous discoveries like that. Akin to take time to smell the flowers. Appreciate things.

Green steps that need attention, a  faithful companion, and a J-45. What a combo. Hope you wrote a song.

  9. Love avocados. Especially on burgers with american cheese and raw onions. On a dog sounds good.

I tried to grow avocado trees here and our unfiltered well water was way too hard so they didn't make it  or at least were on the way to not making it when they burned.

I'm going to give it another try, with fresher water.😁

The high E-string is tuned down to D, the A-string is tuned down to G, and the low E-string is tuned down to D. Or as Keef does it: Remove the low E-string and toss it... And by the way, Gimmie Shelter is played in standard tuning. (Don't know if you, by mentioning that particular song in this context, was implying that it's an "open G" song.) 🙂

When I gig (3 times a year lately) we start off with Start me up to Honky Tonk Women to Brown Sugar. I tune the A string down to G and just palm mute (or just avoid) both E strings. It's a great quick tuning way to sound like Keith without having to have a dedicated "open G" guitar. Then for the next song turn the tuner on silent and tune up the A and move along...nothing to see here..

An intro I love - have often wondered exactly how he got that sound, the notes have a 'plunk' almost like a Fender Rhodes - there's obviously amp trem there but what else? Studio eq?

None of the vids I've seen so far have explained it.

Not sure and I'm not able to nail it- yet.  When Charlie kicks in on drums it is so cool that I kinda lose concentration like Michael Palin with the fish.

My dad wanted to be a fighter pilot. When he was selected for B-24 school the thought of being responsible for the lives of his crew, scared him to death. So he really applied himself to his training. He scored so high in school that the AAF would not let him go over seas and kept him as a B-24 pilot instructor. Fortunately for me as the mortality rate of B-24 crews was so high.

I've always been infatuated by WWII and agree, the Battle of Britain in 1940 was the turning point for the European theatre.  My Dad was a medic in the South Pacific. My wife's office borders Zamperini field in Torrance, California (named after Japanese POW Louis Zamperini). Unbroken was the movie of his story. The Collings collection of Vintage aircraft is stationed there 3 months out of the year. You can even pay to ride in their aircraft. They have the world's only flying B-24 Liberator (aka flying coffin - no wonder mihcmac is glad his dad didn't fly in one).

I occasionally work remotely in her office and one day the planes were taking off and landing. It was such a thrill.

Here's The "Witchcraft" Sorry, I wish I was like One L (Pip) and could actually take decent photos. This was out of her office window. She was having a patient conference when I burst into her room (better windows in her office) and said, "So sorry but I have to take a picture of this plane!"

    Here's another that just landed:

I've read that the P-51 Merlin engine has a distinctive sound. It does. Gives chills.

Dammit. Hate talk boxes, have never had any luck with them.  I use a wah for them.  Sucks.

The Wah - nice talk box replacement, never thought of that.

They are simple to use Rotator Cuff Tear. Pretend you’re burping the words and use a little gain which is on the talk box.

If I can do a shameless plug - Listen to Black Squirrel’s “The Girl is Fine”. Fun stuff.
