How about YouTube guitarists. It’s a thing I guess. It’s cool though… some super people out there.

Agree. Marty Scwartz is a great teacher and doesn't seem to be full of himself.  Some others are painful and painfully slow but you can't please everyone. Seen some just wrong out there too. Otherhand some understated and really excellent. There was a lesson on Honky Tonk woman, a song I have played for 40 years, incorrectly it turns out. Had an ah ha moment recently. Really a lot of fun during these pandemic, war, social division days that we are in. Fun to play and reach a few milestones.

  2. Thanks guys, we will practice 4 times that week before the gig so I definitely want to be prepared and not be a drag on anyone because all of us will be prepared, a bunch of OCDers. I forgot to mention that the other thing that can be done now that didn't exist back then is instantaneously looking up how to play something on YouTube or the like. Is saving me hours.

  3. Getting together to do the Arkansas Alzheimers benefit gig in July. Going to be big with an estimate of 700 people (actually a combination of activities all centered around the benefit). I just started practicing. Most of the songs we have played before, last time 4 years ago. I realized I had zero memory of how to play them never mind which part I am supposed to play. A lot of songs would probably make you upchuck (stairway to heaven, freebird) but I am excited to play them because the folks at this concert will go nuts.

Now the reason for the post. In 1978-79  when I was playing 3 times a week, I would haul my own gear (which was my guitar, an amp and the only peripheral I had, a talk box). I would tune by ear before the gig and I would have notes taped to the floor as well as the song list.

Now I have an iPad loaded with the lyrics and chords in an app called setlists, music tuned down a half a step (so we geezers can sing them) on an app called Anytune which lets me play things at any speed up to full so I can learn the solos (Slash and Jimmy Page) and I can practice in a little room with either headphones or use an attenuator. I wish that I had what I have now...when I was younger.

For grins here is our setlist (singers are parenthetical). I like to post threads to get something out of it.

So here goes, how do you prep? Teach me.

    SET 1
    Rock n Roll (Guy)
    We're an American Band (Terry)
    Tie Your Mother Down (John)
    Honky Tonk Women (Phillip)
    Come Together (Terry)
    Sweet Child (KeKe)
    Carry on Wayward Son (Guy)
    Renegade (John)
    Jumping Jack Flash (Terry)
    Victim of Love (Phillip)
    Free Fallin' (Guy)
    Don't Stop Believin' (Guy)
    Acoustic Mini-set
    Seven Bridges Road (Guy/Everyone)
    Backwater (Guy)
    SET 2
    Rocky Mtn Way (Phillip)
    May Jane's Last Dance (Guy)
    American Woman (Terry)
    Stairway (Guy)
    Rock Candy (Guy)
    Limelight (KeKe)
    Encores
    Hotel California (Guy)
    Freebird (Terry)
    Highway to Hell ( Guy)

    All good and valid points.
I’ve noticed that people give people with their political views much, MUCH leeway, while giving people who have different political viewpoints zero leeway.

example: Ukraine…..President Trump impeached for telling Zelinski to investigate Biden’s son’s involvement with a sketchy energy company…the left FURIOUS with his not being forced to leave office.   Biden & son have AMPLE evidence of corruption in Ukraine (Hunter’s laptop), the left silent or spouts “Russian Misinformation”.

    Or collusion

Yeah thanks. Not to run it in the ground, but just to emphasize I've had the adrenaline high from a great song or gig before. You know the crowd is dancing or getting into it and the band is really cooking. But this seemed like it was related to the physical vibrations of the instruments. Like the sound absorbed into the soul or something. [blush] I know that sounds corny.

I've found that anything is possible with Dead Flowers.

  6. It's a kind of connection on another plane, sort of surreal. I played in a band in the 70s where it was my life. Practiced 2-3 times a week. Gigged twice to three times a month. I quit and went to college and then post grad then career and when I turned 50 in 2010 the old band (except one) got back together for a reunion 33 years after we used to play. The other guitar player is incredibly talented and can sing Robert Plant and Brad Delp as well as nail Slash's solo on Sweet Child as well as a lot more. We got together to "practice" before the birthday party and started playing songs we hadn't played together since the 70s. Would play the whole song. We gave each other looks that communicated song changes, your turn to fill, wait until next go round, etc. Then we played the harmony solo for Can't Get Enough. Not a hard thing but it just flowed. The small audience of wives went nuts. It was incredible. Goose bumps and the lot. One of the reasons I love playing. So yes, it happens. I appreciate it when it does, like so many other things these days.

  7. Would have to be taken in context when it comes to me because the pandemic was a part of it, an added feature of the things that happened. In the last 3 yearsI went through fire loss, the death of my mother, my best friend from training days, and my brother in law, a colon tumor that required a second wider resection (the kind of tumor that Steve Jobs had so I take it seriously), and a big change of jobs.

So what did I learn?...sounds pretty dumb but here goes.....2 parts

    • Take time to appreciate and smell the freaking flowers
    • Choose to be happy because it is a choice.

Sorry to hear about this Tman.  Hopefully this is one of those situations where no news is good news.  I will keep your in-laws in my thoughts.

The hardest part is not knowing anything.

    Thank you

    Tman, any updates ?

We've called their cell phones and used an app that they use and nothing. They live on the outskirts of Odesa on a 5 acre plot just away from the city. I read on the news that things are happening there. Like I said before, they are 80 years old and certainly not a threat.

I just read this, holy hell.

Your entire family is overdue for a mountain of good fortune.  Here's hoping they're okay and the invaders can f**k off as they say.

Completely agree. I loved what the Ukrainian navy ship said to the Russian ship.

Are they Aetheist like you? Just curious… In any case I’ll say a pray for them & you….

Thank you Lars. They would certainly appreciate it. I don't feel like I need any extra effort, things are finally Turing around except for this nightmare. btw I am not an atheist, just not religious per se.

    Well, Lars...

It may be due to Evelyn Wood, but Tman, you might (or might not) have noticed,  did state his in laws joined a Presbyterian mission in the Ukraine.  Doesn't sound too atheistic to me.

    Exactly

And we hope to hear something soon. And all good hopefully.  It really has to be nerve wracking for your wife.  So my best hopes and wishes go out to her.

Thanks Whitening. She really appreciates it. She's handling all of this well considering.

T-Brother, I know it's a trying time for you and your lovely wife but quite possibly the Lord put them there for this very reason. I pray that his hand is upon them and will guide and protect them as they help the people of Ukraine.      Cookie

CookieMonster thank you. Hoping for a turn in the tide and for a good outcome. Like I said in the beginning, really unbelievable.

I rarely hear either so if and when I hear "American Pie" I'll sit through it as I always liked it.  But when "Stairway" comes on I always switch the station because I never could stand that song.  Same with "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the live "free Bird".   And yeah, "Hey Jude" can be a grind.  I might listen for so long but will switch stations before that "never ending' ending starts.  [wink]

Actually, the only time I personally heard that done was back in '65 when a "race station" DJ played Roy Head's "Treat Her Right" back-to-back-to back-to-back because he liked it so much.  Idid too, so I was OK with it.

And as for acoustic "sing-a-long" tunes, me and some buddies would occasionally get together and do this tune---

And of course, we would take that advice.  [wink]

    Whitefang

Great idea. Didn't he do "Sunshine"? Always one of my favorites from that time and very playable.

    Wow.

I hope they are ok and can get out sometime.

If they have determined to stay then I hope they can keep their heads down.

My best wishes to you and them.

Thank you. They were pretty determined to make a life there and they love it over there but had no way of predicting this. They went through the Korean War as children. They are on the outskirts of Odesa. Looks like things are heating up there and I hope we hear from them soon.

You'd think so or at least I would. That is definitely a conversation I won't have with him. Thank you for the well wishes.

Hey Tman, hoping everything turns out alright for your wife and her parents...my gosh how much does one person have to endure.  Who do you tell?  I think you should tell your cousin Debbie,  a great human interest story and maybe they can help to intensify efforts to find them or at least get some communications.  Just a thought.

I forgot you knew her. What a great idea. She is a famous newscaster in Indianapolis. Thanks Kelly and all the best.

Life is so damn unpredictable!  With all the rough roads your family has been on, sure seems like it’s time you get a break.  I hope to God your in-laws are okay and get back home soon…. You and your wife hang in there.   The sun will shine again.

Thanks so much. I thought after I wrote the post that I have morphed into the Gibson forum martyr recent of a yearly pity party. I don't like the role. I am trying like to hell to think positively and look at it all in the rear view with some happy endings.

Tman, Its a worry, but the odds are in their favour. I hope you get word sooner than later, and that its what you need to hear.

Yep hoping for any kind of communication. They aren't citizens and are American citizens but Korean originally. The community sticks to themselves and who knows how they are being treated in this situation. They are 80 years old. Hopefully not being abused.

Phillip, Dang!   Your in-laws (and you and your family) have really been through it.

I'm sure communications in Ukraine are not the best right now..... I suspect you'll hear from them soon.

They have to be strong people..... give my best to your wife.

Thanks Danville, she is kind of in a learned helplessness mode. Truly bizarre times.

    Hang in there Tman

    Thank you kid blast.

Thanks everyone for your well wishes, thoughts and prayers. They will be very appreciative when I tell them.

I will report as soon as I hear some thing.

You obviously didn't grow up listening to New York City radio stations!

What's funny is that I was with 2 New Yorkers at the time (My dad was from Brooklyn and it was with his friend's kids that were my age). They said it happened up there. Can't believe you said that.

And the way things are going over there, they are definitely doing God's work, for sure.

    😐

Thanks Sparky (I hope you don't mind me calling you that). Much appreciated.

Thank you Karloff, It helps me to hear these comments. The saying about things coming in 3s has expired and unfortunately they are on number 4. Surely the pendulum should swing the other way.

Tman, sorry to hear that.  My wife has relatives in Poland, so while not exactly the same, she has been to church every day lighting a candle for them.  I'll have her do one for you tomorrow.  Hang in there!

Thank you. It is currently a crazy world we live in.

  15. Not sure why I am posting this. I have to tell someone and I'm not on FB or any other social media. Maybe the collective power of good thoughts might make a difference. I'm not religious or I would ask for prayers. This is 100% true. Here goes.

My in laws lived through the Sylmar fire in LA in 2017 with only what they could grab and came to live with us in Malibu. They separated soon afterwards, stress related. One year later my father in law was living with us when our house burned down in the Woolsey fire in 2018. Fires have names here because they are so frequent. My wife and I were in San Diego and he was at the house, grabbed our dog Brynn and made it out alive.

My in laws got back together a year later and then their son, my brother in law, died last year. Extremely traumatic.

Last November they decided they still had things to do in life and they moved to join a Presbyterian mission in Ukraine. They are there now and we haven't heard anything.

It is so incredible that I don't know what to say or think.

Am. Pie has gotten to Stairway status to where I change the station when I hear it. Its a good song, just like many anthemic type songs are hard for me to listen to now. I'm getting tired of Kashmir and Bohemian Rhapsody as well. Of course there is the Free Bird and as big a Beatles fan as I am I loath Hey Jude.

Agree 90%, I still love Hey Jude and can listen to it any time.

I may be sick of Am pie but it is a great sing along with a group of people and doesn't require huge practice. Any other suggestions Sgt.? What would you play at a party?

  17. I remember being on vacation on Pensacola beach in 1972  and the song was played on the radio. As soon as the song finished the DJ said that was so good he was going to play it again and then he did. It was the first and only time in my life that I ever heard that happen. Not even with the Beatles.

btw thanks for posting. I am going to a meeting in San Diego this weekend and am going to get together with a few other guitarists and do an acoustic jam for the after meeting beach party. I'll download these lyrics and we'll play this, not sure why I didn't think of it. Any other suggestions? 😁
