If you are looking for an acoustic amp with a view to playing out at some point, I absolutely recommend the AER Compact 60. I’ve owned so many amps over the years and the AER is so far ahead of everything else on the market. It’s great for guitar AND vocals-something that all other amps struggle with at meaningful levels-and the build quality is astonishingly good.

I’ve had my C60 for several years and have used it at every show I’ve played since then. I play for a living and regularly do 3-6 shows a week, and it’s been in and out of cars, vans, buses, trains, plane holds etc etc and has never missed a beat. For small to medium sized shows I use it as my sole source of sound reinforcement (I’ve used it this way for everything from house gigs to 800 capacity rooms with a seated and quiet audience) and for theatre/arts centre shows I use it as my guitar monitor and DI. The DI in the Compact 60 is the best sounding and most clean DI I’ve come across, and regularly gets compliments from sound engineers who enjoy working with it.

They’re not cheap, but it’s an amp that sounds stellar and will last forever. Super light and portable too. Cannot recommend AER highly enough!

    Second everything Jinder mentioned.

EA, long time no see! Hope your are doing well. I keep working on my songs, singing, etc. Progress is slow but at least steady, with vocal hiccups taking place from time to time 😂 I still enjoy the journey as much as ever. What about your musical journey of late? I remember you posting an original song as a work in progress a few years back. Did you finish it?

As for my song and Nick Cave, no I have actually listened very little to him over the years. So any resemblance is more of a coincidence. With that said, I have always been aware of him and thought of his music as very likely fitting my tastes, but never really given it enough listening.

    Lars

Sounds like a bit like Ship Song or Weeping Song, take a listen Lars.  The song from a few years back, technically its done, I play it out live and it gets feedback positive, it does sound good. But .. Ive still not fully recorded it with all the parts, no idea why. I had so many people push me to lay it out done so its part of my history but I still have not done it. Might be a winter challenge !

  3. Thanks for the input folks. I checked again and noticed the ones with compensated saddle were the biggest culprits, the Dove and J-150 specifically. The TV Hummingbird is spot and suprisingly, or maybe not the 43' LG-2 has 100% spot on intonation, even after 80 years.

Might take the maple cousins for checkup at the luthier..

  4. Why is it so rubbish ?

Almost all of my Gibsons intonation gets really poor as i fret up the neck, where its almost half a tone off normally when im on the say low B on the 7th fret.

When I try my Furch its dead on, and the Martin pretty close, but the Gibbys so sloppy.

Why is that, and is there a way to fix this folks ?

    cheers,

    EA

You hit on an interesting point. It seems most who buy Gibson Acoustics buy them for Mahogany Back & Sides.. Gibson Rosewood & Maple back & Sides Guitars are Outliers…

Actually, pretty big fan of Gibson maple here, but only on large bodies ..own the Dove and J-150 and love the warmth, yet cripness of those guitars, not missing the overtones you tend to get with rosewood. I had two rosewood Gibsons, the Songwriter and the Advanced Jumbo, moved them on both. Still own a Martin with rosewood but hardly ever play it.  Personal taste I guess.

  6. As i dont gig much these days i realised i now change strings on average six to nine months, maybe more on some.

But … as im doing a 3 hour gig today and have really worn Elixirs on the J-150 i thought it might be worth a change.

Wow, the tonal differnece is massive, especially on the bass, and when plugged in a gorgoeus light chorus shimmer is heard.

Old strings on a qulity guitar sound great, but new strings give great dynamics and value also.

The greatest color is blue, and it's because I say so. If you don't see the true superiority of blue, and happen to find greatness, value, entertainment, comfort, or any virtue whatsoever, in other colors besides blue, hereby know that you are utterly and embarrassingly wrong.

I love blue, especially electric blue.

  8. My 2002 J-150 i managed to buy for $1400 ten years ago. Its my favourite Gibson in the stable, the tone and playability is supreme.

Not surprised they go for 3-4k now, that period was majestic for those guitars.

He may not play the traditional folky stuff, but it isn't hard to imagine that after hearing these 2 back-to-back.

It really shows the different natures, , , and the similarities of the clazzik squares.

                               Enjoy ~

Are you watching EA Prague !?

    Yes I am !

I do hear quite a significant difference even they are obvious cousins. When played in person the difference is way more pronounced.

As Ive said it before, prefer the look of the Bird, but love the more diirect, focuseed tone of the Dove.

Both look great side by side !

  10. HI folks,

    Long time no hear !

Warning up front - non Gibson content, but Im reaching out to old and new friend on the forum to share some advice about UST pickup problem

I have a 25 year old Cort Earth 100 which has been an absolutely road warrior and I use it to host Open Mics and when I neeed a trusty beater for gig purposes.

It has a Fishman barn-door UST pickup system which for 25 years has been utterly faultless. However in last two weeks Ive noticed that when i start playing a little harder there is strong, harsh cracking or crackling sound coming out of the amp.  (it makes the guitar unplayable)

It doesnt look like its got to do with the jack, as the sound really comes on when I dig in and play harder rather than moving around or movign the lead aroudn the jack.

Im quite lost as to what to do to address it, other than taking it to a techncians.

I took the barndoor box out, tried to cliean it, blow some air into it incae it was dusty but to no avail.

Is there anything you would recommend to try also ?

    thanks a lot,
    Euro

  11. Yes, loved the arrangement and performace Em7, pure class.

Bif fan of the Dove here .. I love looking at my Hummingbird, but I love playing the Dove. They do have a bid, full sound, not clarity is oustanding but also shaed of warmth and that maple syrup.

But they have to be broken in, otherwise they can sound a bit tight and boomy, like the two in the orignal video ...give em 10 years and they will be fab.

Yes - you can almost be categorized as a convert.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                      Guess you will stand as a crown-witness when it comes to identifying and understanding the difference between the 2.                                                                                                                                                                                                A deliberate thought and splendid choice from Gibson - which especially becomes obvious with faded steel.

In other wordsBe glad you still have the TV Bird, , , , what year is it from btw - 2014 ?

    2011 TV Bird .. Dove is 2002.

Gotta say I just love looking at the colours and changing burst intensity across the day on the Hummingbird ... its almost enough

While i am not a fan of the tobacco colour, the sound of that Dove blows the Bird away here. Sure, the bird is loud and a cannon, but the subtle beauty of the Dove and its smooth, mellow feel just sounds like heaven to my ears.

As much as I want to love the tone my Hummingbird more,  I have to say the Dove's warmth, clarity and projection wins out almost every time.

  14. I do hear a sigfificant difference on my J-150 when I do regulary water the sponge in the Kyser soundhole humidifier I use. We have RH around 35% and thats not enough so I do do humdify it. That  warm, maple, syrupy sound really comes out in droves.

ps: good to see the artwork on your guard is still fully intact. That used to go really fast on the modern Birds and J-200's.
