  1. Too soon for sound impressions? Perhaps you’re waiting on the string change and saddle tweak before you lean in.

Lotsa folks have lotsa string theories, and I’ve done my share of experimenting, but fwiw, I always come back to D’addario’s EJ19s for my maple jumbo.

What are you thinking of throwing on there?

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts and a tune. Congrats, Buc!

I am now the proud owner of a 2003 Gibson J-185 of the sinister persuasion!  Coming out of Tennessee, should arrive Friday.  Woohoo!

Hot diggetty! I guess your scout gave it a thumbs up. Can’t wait to hear all of it!

It is, however, located in the wilds of Canada where the dry winter air can wreak havoc on thin acoustic guitar woods..........I am a bit trepidatious over this potential issue.  It might be fine........it might not.

Assuming it’s lived there for ‘lo these many years, I’d think the havoc, were it an issue, would have already ensued. If the repair history doesn’t have red flags, then perhaps it acclimated just fine and/or was properly taken care of. My three cents…

And then there's this.  Never have I seen a southpaw 185.  It's a 2003 model and appears to be in very good condition...........  Sheesh.  First world problems.

Yes, that one. Do that one.

I’ve moved the L-00 off to my local store for consignment-

Well, the plot thickens… After several trips across the country for 72-hour trials, alas, I’ve brought ‘er home. It’s weird-I already said my goodbyes, and now…she’s back.

I still do need to sell, but I think I’ll wait a few months before I bring it back to the shop, maybe mess with some alternate tunings and see if I can rationalize keeping it.

Not gonna lie, it was a rush to open the case, after all these months.

  6. Wow, everyone…I’ve been mainly lurking lately, and I’m delighted to see the resurrection of my little offering. Thank you so very much for the listens and for all the encouragement and kind words. ❤️

I hadn’t heard it in a while myself, so it was fun to give it a re-listen. Yeah, it does seem to stand up just fine. Whodathunkit?

    Cheers, one and all!!

  7. Last night, I performed a set in a local showcase, hosted by the amazing Jay Brown. He sat in with me on a few numbers, and I thought you guys might be innerested. Here’s an old original:

And here’s the finale. (It’s been a while since I did the last-minute group jam thing, but it was fun.)

  8. I have played a handful of ‘birds— I couldn’t tell you which models/years, etc. And after listening to these clips—I must now confess that I’m not, I don’t think, a ‘bird person in the first place.

Neither clip moves me—there’s a kind of harshness in there that doesn’t work for my ear. Upon rewatching them, and noting the lovely playing in both, I found myself wanting to hear those played on a J-45 or a Dove. My ear almost never registers “warm” when I hear a Hummingbird being picked. It’s a showy sound, but, for me, never an intimate one. I don’t want to lean in closer.

Granted, I do recognize (and appreciate) the very distinct sound of a strummed ‘bird, but I don’t hear that in the first video. So maybe, Em7, you are onto something with your question. Maybe the sweetness (that even I hear on other recordings) is, as you suggest, missing.

    Interesting…

  9. Not long ago, a friend confided in me and told of a late-in-life crush on somebody and of how there were glimmers of hope. The tale put me in that other person’s shoes for a bit, so this little song came about.
As usual, nothing fancy here, but a little offering to my friend…and to all who keep their good hopes alive—Give Me Time.

Take a listen, if you like…and thanks.
