Not to digress -  I said my piece on Monday morning -  but Sheryl Crow (the person/performer) isn't half bad.  Give a listen to  "All I Wanna Do"  and /or a look at her video  "First Cut Is the Deepest."   Lotta great shots of her Gibson on that one.  And her.    She has toured/performed  with the likes of Michael Jackson, Jimmy Buffet, Emmylou, George Strait, etc.  I would guess she's done more as a song writer.  Was favored to win two big awards (Grammys?) but lost out to Kelly Clarkson.   From MO, she started out with a '62 Gibson Country Western  but eventually asked Gibson to produce a copy for her. I guess she feared it would start to look like Willy's  Martin - "Trigger".   Problem is - she's a 'pop' singer and all over the place. Plays more 'benefits' and things it seems than most.  Which, I guess is actually a good thing.  So - while many think signature guitars are a joke - in her case, I think it's the real deal.

To your point, this is the real deal, imo - two Gibson women (sans gits), having a moment.

  2. A few years back, I went into the studio as a first timer, with my maple J100 and a lovely J-45. This song features the capo’d J100 to start, but listen to how the J45 (uncapo’d) rolls in there…

There’re other instruments in there, of course, but with ear phones, I can sure hear the balance and complementary nature of those two guitars. It’s what came to mind when I read your posts…

Now, at the other end, here’s one with just the maple that I don’t think would work with near as well with just the hog:

And here’s one where the converse is true:

Anyway, food for thought—your mileage may vary

  3. Evening,

I’ve been checking in regularly but feeling quiet, I guess. It’s that time of the year my Gibsons are hydrating in their cases, and I only pick up the Rainsong every once in awhile.

Glad I did today, as I was greeted by this new song. I feel my writing is especially simple these days—but it’s still fun, when it happens. Not complaining one whit!

Have a listen, if you like—it is, if course, a rough and early draft, but I think it’ll work. “When It All Shakes Out.”

  4. Well here I am, getting set to participate in a songwriting workshop this weekend, hosted by the great Verlon Thompson. I understand Shawn Camp will be dropping by for a few hours tomorrow—we’re a small group of about 14, so I’m looking forward to some learning and playing, etc. Things will cap off Saturday eve with a class performance at Verlon’s venue, The Filming Station, with each of us getting a  video souvenir of our song.  Gulp! Better decide soon which song to do, I guess.

We’re also going to hang out at the CM Hall of Fame—I heard the Guy Clark exhibit is fabulous, and Verlon’s just the guy to experience that with.

Here, all the hotel art is photos of guitars, which amuses me. Anyway, I’ll report back if I make it big. 😁🤓

  5. Yessiree!
Can’t believe our Sal hasn’t heard this one before now. And as great JC’s cover is, I think Kristofferson’s original is the penultimate version.

And this one ain’t half bad, either! It’s just a great, great song. Thanks, Roger! 👍🏻👍🏻

Talking about Doves I had the 96 flying this Friday. An old tune paid a revisit and we said helo. You might remember it - even though I probably got some of the lyrics wrong.

Aw, so very nice and way more true to the song than the original. Go fig…

  7. Thanks again for the listens, all. After fixing some of the clunky phrasing, I’ve also re-recorded it (dropping it a step and a half to help with the vocals some).

Original link gets you to the revised version now, if you’re interested.

At the end of August, I’ll head for songwriting workshop in Nashville hosted by the fabulous Verlon Thompson—I can’t wait ‘til he gets a whack at this. 🤓
