  1. Glad to hear it went well! Would have loved to see it.

A few years back I went to watch U.S. country singer Sam Outlaw (!) and was more impressed by the opening act, Nashville singer-songwriter Molly Parden.
I would not have been surprised if I had preferred the opener at your gig too.

  2. Oh, man that was a lot of notes 😀 Incredible skill level. Personally, I prefer the slowed down and more somber style of the Path Metheny song. Wonderful stuff!

Aaaach.   Sorry.  Jumped to the lyrics and didn't see the link for the song.  Great job on the chords and melody too!!

Hey, no worries! Thanks to you, and Murph as well.

Your finest piece until now - no doubt.

Both text & tune walk in the same direction and don't fail to reach the bell. .

Thanks a bunch! Yes, I thought the new addition served the song well. It's rewarding going back with a new skills and a different perspective to revisit older songs.

Great lyrics.   Will be interesting finding a melody and chords to put a frame around it and hang it on the wall !

Thanks for the lyrical comment! Not sure I follow the rest, though. There are chords and melody for sure, but wether they are frame wordy is debatable 😄

  7. I never tend to finish my songs, instead I keep tweaking and trying new things. The last few days I've been adding new vocals and instruments to a song I wrote about three or four years ago. I also remixed it and added a sort of atmospheric short intro. What do you think?

    GROW WINGS & FLY

Do you remember so long ago?
    It must have been ´86
We wore the grooves of "The Queen Is Dead"
    sitting on your bed
with dreams and plans in our heads

Only you had the brains and grades
We cried on the day you left
and I had to stay behind
    to bare the grind
    of the assembly line

Some dreams grow wings and fly
    others crash wither and die
May yours soar like and eagle in the sky

I sent you mixtapes in the mail
We talked for hours on the phone
I said "go be an engineer
    aim for the stratosphere
this town will still be here"

You moved to the city and you never called
Your mother said you found someone
All the years since have not erased
    my memory of your face
    laughter or youthful grace

Some dreams grow wings and fly
    others crash wither and die
May yours soar like and eagle in the sky

    Dark glasses hide your face
A streak of grey gives your age away
You say you're just stopping by
    but I sense a lie
    please tell me why

All these years that I envied you
I'm so sorry but I never knew
You're safe now you've come this far
    He is behind bars
    No bruises no more scars

  8. The blue Hummingbird is not one I'm particularly drawn to. However, I think it's pretty clear Miranda Lambert is a talented musician, deserving her own Gibson sig guitar. If only forum-approved artists were to get signature guitar, hardly anyone below the age of fifty would buy one. Gibson is in the business of selling guitars, not giving out signature guitars as awards to artists this forum deems worthy.

  9. That is sad news indeed. We are losing the legends at a far too fast a rate, and unfortunately new ones are not being created in the same way in these modern times. Music and culture are divided into smaller and smaller subsegments, and we each hang out only in our own little familiar digital bubble, not being aware of what goes on outside of it.

    Great music and great Band.

I thought this chat was about The J-200s in Springsteen's movie and then you're talking about what Bruce did or did not and compare with Zappa or politicals opinions and blablabla. Can we come back to the the first question  and maybe you should start a new topic like «Do you like Bruce»

Well, he is after all the Sergeant of the most militant fraction of the “One Opinion to Rule Them All” movement, so what else to expect?

  11. Wonderful, both as far as sound and look!

To me they do sound like Birds should, but I can’t say that I have one specific benchmark tonal quality in mind to compare against. I believe guitar tone is a sum of a myriad of specification details and everything matters, but our ears cannot distinguish between the smallest detail when isolated. However, when all details are added up, it’s audible and what makes us able to distinguish one guitar from another.

So if these guitars have the same specs as your benchmark guitar, they will be in the same family tree of tone, at least when comparing guitars of the same age. How could they not?

  12. Thanks for that great input. I really like these kinds of discussions about words and phrasings. We have bounced ideas back and forth on the forum before and every time it has helped me focus my lyrics and, more importantly, really serioussly THINK about the kind of things and traps you bring up. In this case I would like to, somewhat hesitantly, disagree 😀

The points you bring up were things I actually considered when writing, weighing pros and cons, and I felt the pros won out. As for “deep void”,  agreed deep is not needed, but it feels good to sing. I like how the vowels feel and sound in the melody.

The word “submission”  is a combination of meaning and sound. English is my second language, which puts me at a disadvantage. but after the word came to me, I felt it said exactly what I wanted to say, and it sounds good too. Later I actually looked it up in a dictionary to make sure my understanding of the word was correct. So if it works for a Swede…

The superman/book point is more complicated and interesting to discuss. When does a word or phrase, tied to another source, become a strength and when does it become a weakness? To be completely honest, both of these phrases, “fortress of solitude” and “a bridge too far” were part of my vocabulary, but I didn't know their origins. The Superman thing was pointed out to me, after I wrote the song, and I had no idea that it referenced his North Pole place 😳 That's just funny. Last week I heard it mentioned in the Apple comedy show, “Shrinking” by Harrison Ford's character, and it fit perfectly. I don't think anyone actually thinks I'm writing about Superman, and not even his super powers will stop me using a perfectly good combination of words, 😁 As for “a bridge too far”, I knew that phrase came from somewhere and when writing I looked it up and found out about the book and movie. Here, to me at least, the phrase says exactly what I intend and fits the metre. My reasoning is that the meaning of the phrase is generally used and known, even if the origin is not, and for those who do know, I see it as a hidden bonus. The connection to war and fighting fits my intentions.

Anyone else, feel free to join in with feedback. This is interesting stuff, with not necessarily a right or wrong answer. All depends on reference points, based on culture, age, demographics and so on…

Thanks again for bringing these things up!

  13. This is a thread from a month ago, and I just wanted to let you know that the feedback and discussions here led me to spend time working on my song. I have learned quite a bit about my shortcomings, especially vocally. I have iterated cycles of listening/correcting/singing with a few days in between efforts. I have also done some instrumental and mixing changes. All in all, this is now a much improved song, far from perfect, but improved…

I think the newer instrumentation coupled with your singing it with mindfulness has whipped it into much better shape.  It’s a great tune.  Keep refining like you’re doing.  I stand by my earlier comment.  It’s a brilliant complex piece of music.

I really appreciate the kind words.
