Yup...I am one of those....
Nice! And I can see why!
-
An update everybody, just heard back from Wildwood guitars and Gibson has discontinued the songwriter deluxe standard version....
Oh well. I typically buy used anyway, like this 2006 Songwriter Studio Deluxe 12-string that's on its way across the country to me!
-
....Does anyone know why there aren't any other used ones available anywhere?
People like 'em and keep 'em?
-
....since the early 60's, then it was acceptable and fashionable but we're talking about today....
Why is acceptable headstock design today different than it was in the 60s?

Honestly, my photographs cannot fully capture the cherryburst colour gracing the solid spruce top. The finish is actually more like an autumn-burst; it has an amber quality that gently melts into antique orange when under direct light; the overall dusky shading is simply gorgeous.
Yeah, that is a gorgeous burst! Major congrats, Vik, and welcome to the boards.
And that dark fretboard looks like ebony! Sweet!

The guitar is stunning. I expected a satin type finish & it's beautifully glossy and feels great to play.
Yep, they're shiny. Congrats, Rev! I've been selling a number of my Epiphones, but not my EJ-160E!
-
...when she gets here...
Well done, Rev!

I've been eyeballing these because I'm a long time Beatles fan & these guitars are inexpensive which makes me wonder - how do they sound? How's the playability & feel? Any owners care to share your impressions? Thanks! :)
I've got the Lennon signature model. I love it because.... it's the Lennon signature model! The sound and playability are typical for a fairly inexpensive Epiphone -- not bad, but not like a much more expensive Gibson. I love the position of that mag pickup, but it's not tremendously powerful. You'll probably want to run it through a pre-amp or else crank up the volume. I think you ought to get one!

....from now on I am a PRS fan only.....
Seems rather limiting. Good luck with that.
-
.....but I wanted to get something a bit like the 45 and the Hummingbird, that would be made well enough to be kept in the family for a while.
The J15 fits the bill. I did the research and was just about to get one; then I got, uh, distracted.

No i came to you guys for your opinion first....
No problem, Richie. My internet personality is more like Kung-Fu Master, as opposed to Big Dog and Me-Too.

I would always take a Korean model over Indonesian....,
Well, if you already knew the answer, why did you need our chopped liver opinions?
-
Samick built, 2001 Korean Epiphone EJ200,
If you are viewing this, you will probably already be aware that these Korean built epiphones far exceed the quality of the later Chinese and Indonesian builds!
I think that's an exaggeration. And a generalization. Yes, those old Korean-made Epiphones are good. But so is every Chinese-made and Indonesian-made Epiphone that I've ever seen. You tell us if you see and hear any difference!
-
....those '70s Epiphones were the low man on the Japanese-made totem pole....
Yes, I've heard that the early 70s were not good years for Epis, or Gibsons for that matter. That is not the case anymore, of course, and hasn't been for at least a couple decades.
Inexpensive instruments can be very tempting, but nowadays I always stop myself & consider that the money spent on a beater would be better spent if it contributed to the purchase of a seriously good instrument.Wise advice, but it's tough to justify a $2,000 guiltar if you're a beginner, or not that serious about playing. It's usually an "evolutionary" thing, though. The more into you get, the better guitar you want. Here's my latest. It should be quite a while before I think I need a better guitar!

That is just absolutely gorgeous, Cougar! I prefer the ebony boards as well. I'll bet she's a joy.
Thanks, L8! She's definitely a daily player.

I just picked up and EJ-212CE VS....
Great pickup, Dave! Those Epi 12ers sure are pretty. I got really hooked on 12-strings, and still am. I wanted something a little thicker sounding than my old 1970s Epi 12. Picked up a Takamine. Enjoyed it for a while, just enough so that I wanted a really nice 12. And to me and my research, that means Guild. Got a great deal on the JF30-12 pictured below. Corona-built. Gotta have that ebony fretboard! Unbraced arched lam back. Undersaddle pickup. Love this thing. Later I grabbed a deal on what I consider the ultimate 12 - Guild F412. Gorgeous... Action was good, but the saddle was a bit low. I had the pin slots ramped to get better break angle and volume. Still didn't quite bond with that baby, so sold it. This JF30-12 is just too good....

I noticed that I failed to share the price I paid for my win... $90.99!
Score!

Welcome to the forums, Remellick!
....investigating some finds at an online auction I've been visiting obsessively...Hmm. Obsessive auction searching. I'm thinking that's a pretty common affliction around here. That's surely how I acquired most of the Epiphones in my sig. I got sucked in, I tell ya. I mean, 200 bucks for a near new FT-79 IB-64 Texan cherryburst? Or a highly flamed trans black Performer ME? Crazy! Sucked in! So I take it you're not talking about ebay or reverb?
It is a FT-132 model having the (transition era) Kalamazoo blue label....My brother picked up an FT-160 12-string back in the 70s (has that blue label), which I more recently absconded with (but I mainly play the Guild 12). The FT160 is a bolt-on neck, in great shape, basically unplayed, and the vagaries of the market tell me it's worth next to nothing.
....I am waiting, praying that it was a great deal I imagine it to be....Haha, the anticipation. Good luck! I've had a lot of good luck acquiring guitars off the internet and having them delivered. No reason you can't too.
Unless the seller stated the guitar "just got a set-up," you may want to do just that. I have a local tech/luthier do it and take care of any repairs.

I just bought a used Epiphone EJ-160E/VC. The serial # is 14012319984. How do identify when it was made and any other pertinent information? I would like this information so I understand its possible future value also. How many were made etc.
Congrats on your purchase of a very cool guitar! It was made in 2014 in Indonesia. Here's the Epiphone dater page. Prices on ebay are kind of all over the map. Completed listings for used EJ160E's show them going for anywhere from $250 to $660. New ones are on sale at GC for $350! but the new ones no longer have the John Lennon signature, which I think makes the older ones more desirable.
-
I went with a New Hartford built jumbo Guild F50R. Love it.
-
I changed out the synthetic Nut and Saddle for Bone.
Yeah, that would make a difference. Also, sounds like new strings are immediately called for. But what really increases the volume and presence is when you plug her in!
-
Quadruple action would be perfect: back, forth, twist clockwise, twist counterclockwise.
I've got that on my Corona-built Guild JF30-12. It has two truss rods.
-
Well, it's pretty clear you get what you pay for.
Well sure, but I claim this was an unfair test! They picked models where the Epiphone entry was laminate back and sides, while the Gibbie was all solid. Of course that makes a difference, and that's the difference you're hearing, or at least a major part of it. I wish they would have compared Gibbie models similar to Epi's all solid wood Masterbilts. I bet the Gibsons still sound better, but by not as much.
