1. Yeah, we got down to -10 a few days ago. Pend Oreille is a DEEP lake and never freezes over, but some areas are shallow, and the bay below our place is half iced over! Never seen that before!
2. Exactly. Nowadays (and for quite a few years now) you can load up a program to your computer that turns it into a recording studio. I'm using Cubase Elements, which is around 100 bucks. As mentioned, you'll also want a USB audio interface like a Focusrite Scarlett. I plugged my synth straight into the Scarlett, but for guitar playing, you'll likely want a mic. Multitracking is a kick!
3. Oh, for sure. At first I was wondering what the heck was going on, then realized it was just a messed up stamping job, and as mentioned, that's apparently pretty common. Yeah, no big deal. It's a fantastic little 6-string compact jumbo.
4. Haha, good to know! Yeah, after looking at it then looking at it some more, I can kind of see that they were trying to come out with "Made in USA," but the "US" is basically ". ." and the "MADE" is something like "*ASE" (not sure how they got to "S" in there). Well, at least the serial number is legible.... 🙄
5. So I'm taking a pic of the back of the headstock of my J-165... which is easier said than done since the serial number is dark on dark. Anyway, below the serial number I expect it to say Made in USA, but it looks like they really screwed up the stamp when they stamped this one. It's definitely not "USED" or anything like that; I think it's supposed to be Made in USA and the stamper just botched the job. What do you think?
6. Great story. My dad had always played guitar -- mostly a very old beat up 1939 Epiphone Zenith -- and when he almost died from some stomach problem, I bought him a wine red LP Studio and my brother got him a little Fender amp, and he was totally jazzed during his convalescence... and beyond. That also kind of reanimated my interest in guitars, even though I'm mainly a keyboardist, and now after a brief stab at electrics and many years of trying (initially) cheap acoustics then various models, I'm pretty well stabilized in my retirement with three excellent jumbo Guild 12-strings -- F512, F212XL, JF30-12 -- and a beauty of a jumbo Guild 6-string -- F50R.
7. Those don't look like they're ramped very much, if at all. Ramping is usually done when the saddle has been shaved so much, there's hardly any break angle to the strings. Ramping helps increase the break angle. It's usually done to postpone an expensive neck reset. Here's a pic of some ramping....
8. Sorry I'm late to this question. I happen to have an FT-160 myself -- a sunburst. Amazingly good sound coming out of this 12-string that's probably only worth a couple hundred bucks. I'm figuring it was made in the early 70s.
9. Well, Dodger, that blows my mind. I don't even remember that. I do remember I was not happy with the electronics -- one of the reasons I let it go.
10. I just picked up a hog-backed jumbo Guild 12-string (F-212XL). I've already got a rosewood backed jumbo Guild F-512 and a jumbo Guild braceless arched lam maple backed JF30-12. The new F212XL really surprised me. It is a monster of a sound maker, oddly like my JF30-12. The F512 rosewood is a bit more refined and not shouting it out from the rafters like the other two. Still, all keepers. F-212XL
11. Those are very cool, but then they stopped having the signature. Kinda wish I hadn't sold mine....
12. Thanks, Murph. Yeah, I figure I'll take a bit of a hit, like paying rent on having this beauty for a while. That's usually how it goes with buying and selling guitars, at least in my experience. (What sucks with reverb nowadays is having to pay tax on purchases! 🤬
13. I always loved the idea of this short-scale "Compact Jumbo," abalone-rosetted, ebony-fretboarded, burst J-165. Well, I finally bought one. Freaking beautiful guitar. Its condition was listed as "mint," and I see no reason to disagree. I put on new strings, plays easy, big sound comes out of this thing! Thing is, I'm playing jumbo Guild 12-strings about 99% of the time. Hate to have this beauty just sitting around. So I've put this back up for sale on reverb for about what it cost me. $100 off for Gibson forum members! https://reverb.com/item/76154008-excellent-condition-2006-gibson-j-165
14. I think it adds some imminence. "I'll update that address for you" doesn't say WHEN. If you add "I'll go ahead and do it," it (sort of) carries the implication that I'll do it immediately. Kind of the same as saying "I'll proceed to do that."
15. Good to see my old bandmate Brian Ray still playing with him.

Yeah, Gibson is the king of the teardrop burst, though Guild nails one once in a while. Too often Guilds are "around the edge" burst, which is a distant second to a teardrop. This JF30-12 out of Corona is one of the good ones....

Yeah, I don't know what came over me. I've really been playing 12-string mostly lately, and the J165 will sit second fiddle to my jumbo Guild F50R. The 165 has a definite voice, though, saying "I'm here."

Yeah, they don't all have ebony fretboards, only for a couple years? Pity Gibson had that all that ebony confiscated years ago. Have they recovered from that? Do any new Gibson acoustics have ebony boards?

I always liked this model but was never really "in the hunt" for one. Still, it was on the "dream list." Well, the dream suddenly took shape when I saw this one being sold by the original owner: Mint condition 2006 Gibson J-165, sweet sunburst, ebony fretboard, abalone rosette to die for, short scale, 15" lower bout.... a thing of beauty! It hasn't had its photo shoot yet, but here are a few pics from the ad....
20. Then what the hell, get a used Gibson J45. There are over 700 for sale on reverb to choose from. Or a J15. Have a tech give it a good setup so it plays real easy. Why mess around?
21. I think there's a short story there, too.
22. Kind of a veer here, but what's the deal with a white vs. an orange oval label?
23. All my recordings have been audio, so I finally tried a video. Gibson Songwriter 12-string, open tuning....
24. I noticed this Epiphone EF500RAVS Masterbilt on reverb. and after checking the serial number, I realized this is the same one I used to own several years ago! I'm not affiliated with the seller, who is not the guy I sold it to. It's still in excellent shape. As the seller mentions, you just do not see many like this one, if you see any at all! Quite rare, and super cool looking with all that abalone. The price keeps going up since when I bought and sold it, but it's got a make offer. (I somewhat reluctantly sold it to fund a Guild 12-string.) Made special in the Grand Reward factory in China in Guangdong.
