  1. Dunno what strings I had on it but after not playing it for a couple of weeks picked it up and resumed trying to learn the Fahey version of In Christ there is no East or West, poorly.  However the sound is amazing!  Woody, yet clear and deep.  Just deep happiness listening to it despite my fumbling

Sounds like an enjoyable evening. And I've gotta tell you- your  Nick Lucas guitar is on my short list in the Ones That Got Away file. Remembering when it was offered- priced fairly, and while I was getting my head around the idea of being ok with such an insignificant bit of finish damage from a leak from a Humidipak, on the treble side rim (you know, the part where it's only visible to one's pant leg), The General was ok with it sooner.  Good for you, and it's good to hear it's allowing you and yours to communicate on a musical level as well.

If you get a chance to get another one I would recommend it.  It has a truly unique sound, and in the video they posted of it when it was originally sold through Wildwood the guy described it as throaty and robust.   I suppose that's as good a description as any but it has a truly deep sound in the bass notes without the resonance you would get with like a D35 or HD 28.   I suppose that's a combination of the depth at the lower bout and the Maple wood.

  3. It's been fun, but frankly a bit of a mixed bag.  My wife hasn't played consistently in a long time whereas I've been taking lessons for years and while I'm not great I'm barely competent.  So for example we are trying to play the John Fahey In Christ there is no Easy or West, a great song but a good portion of our time is spent helping her with stuff that now is second nature to me.

On the other hand it makes me realize that my lessons have had some effect, it's still nice to play with her, and I get to hear someone play the Nick Lucas which is a really fantastic and unusual guitar.

  4. Spent part of last night playing my Southern Jumbo while the wife played the Nick Lucas Maple, with light strings.  It was fun.  Both really nice guitars; the Southern Jumbo was warm and focused, the Nick Lucas has a very deep sound when fingerpicking, quite unusual.   Kind of went well together.  Anyways, just sharing a Sunday Gibson thought

Those DR Rares Bluegrass are too heavy at the bottom end - this is a very warm sounding guitar - I reckon most would think it was rosewood in a blind test - I think a .056 might just be overkill?

I had Pyramid Silver Plated strings on my Southern Jumbo.  That would brighten things up!

Generaldeedle you didn't say which model you played that was more articulate. TV or the original. I certainly think that the TV would be more articulate. My personal thoughts on the break angle which is all I can see that is structurally different between the two is the SJ center holes would be stronger bridge support than the back holes on the J45 but I don't believe it changes the overall tone.maybe a little if your picking right by the bridge but I don't really know.

It was a regular Southern Jumbo vs a regular J45.  I asked the person at the store if I was hearing it right and he said yes and I have trusted his opinion throughout the years.

  7. I have a Martin HD 28 VTS (aged top), and a Southern Jumbo, a Guild Maple Jumbo, and a Gibson Nick Lucas Maple.  I also am trying to learn blues fingerpicking.  Of all the pairs, the Martin and the Southern Jumbo are the most similar (they are different though, don't get me wrong), but if you want something with a really different sound I'd consider a Maple Gibson like a j 200 or a dove.

  8. I almost bought the Taylor 614ce at the local shop.  Wanted a Maple, bonus money burning a hole in my pocket but something was holding me back, as nice as the guitar was.  Then saw the Nick Lucas L 100 Maple on sale over at AGF and couldn't plunk my money down fast enough enough, don't regret the choice at all, but the Taylor was just "nice", I'm still learning the Lucas- it has a really unusual depth and tone

The J200 strings were essentially the same as the Masterbuilt Premiums, with the addition of silk windings near the ball ends. I've used them on SJs and J-45s, and still have a few sets around. They are fine for any guitar that responds well to PB strings.

Thanks!  I have a Southern Jumbo, maybe it will go on next
