J-200 Koa Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 I recently had an opportunity to play a SJ-300: rosewood back and sides with mahogany neck. Besides the wonderful tone, I was equally impressed with how much heavier this guitar felt than a comparable SJ-200. Both guitars had the same pickup installed. Is it just me or does a mahogany neck/rosewood body weigh more than a maple/maple guitar?
maninblack Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 That has always been my experience. My r/w guitars are the heaviest.
Jayla Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Isn't rosewood one of the heavier woods? And I don't mean heavy as in "heaviosity," like "whoa! hey, what a heavy sound," but literally in terms of weight. That's what I seem to recall reading...
Taylor Player Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Rosewood should tend to be heavier in weight than Maple as it is a denser wood. I used to own a handbuilt guitar with African Padauk back and sides once. It was an OM size guitar but weighed much more than my Rosewood AJ Dread. Cocobolo is also a heavy wood as is Madi, Pau Ferro and some others.
ballcorner Posted January 8, 2009 Posted January 8, 2009 Go find a Hamer electric from the 80s with the aluminum neck. THAT is a heavy guitar - the rest are toothpicks.
