capmaster
Yeah polyester is the cheap finish that chips like glass on Mexican Fenders and Japan Jacksons. Urethane is on American Fenders and is very tough. Sadly it chipped badly on an American Standard Ash Telecaster of a bandmate of mine. This hit him very hard at his actual stage of cancer. His weakness might be the reason he dropped this nice and fairly new guitar. They told him it would take a complete refinish.
capmaster
Of course you are correct, cap, but my point was that it is misleading to suggest that the chemistries used in polyesters and polyurethanes (and nitrocellulose for that matter) in industrial or guitar coatings are even remotely similar. That's like saying Bonnie Raitt and Robert Fripp are similar because they are both guitar players. There are millions of recipes leading to products with a wide variation of properties. Plasticizers are also among them, e. g. the alkyd resins added to "nitro" and oil finishes.
