MaplesOfWrath
Does anyone know why a lot of the vintage Gibson archtops don't cost that much money, comparatively? I'm thinking of 1930s-1950s L-50s, L-48s, even some L7s. I'v never had a chance to try them, but they look really cool. Any thoughts? Thanks. zombywoof
Because there is not near the market for them there is for flattops.
Versatile
IMO flat-tops lend themselves to a wider range of acoustic styles ie fingerstyle... Archtops are wonderful and have great character and beauty of construction Electric archtops are probably in a different league with their jazz orientation V
milod
I agree that it's mostly the marketplace. Back when I started a bit over 50 years ago, there was a bit of a vestigial market for archtops, but whether the young folkie or young rocker sort, anything but an archtop was one's purchase goal - the one possible exception being a semi of some sort. Even then, a few electric archtops were sold, but there wasn't much market at all for acoustic archtops at all, at least not if they would cost much more than $100 U.S. m
