heyronbrown
Hello! Played a Mid 70's J-40 w/pinless bridge recently. Top appeared solid but does anyone know if the mahogany back and sides are solid or laminated? Thanks
Paul E
I found out about the J-40 in "Gibson's Fabulous Flat-Top Guitars" on page 127. Its listed as big sound, small price. They made the J-40 from 1971 to 1982. It had solid mahogony back and sides. It went through a few changes, mainly in the neck. They say the pinless bridge was easier to build, easier to repair and easier to change strings on but sadly not productive of the tone and volume associated with a pin bridge. Hope this helps. heyronbrown
Thanks that helps alot! Guitar sounds great and has a coffee colored top I've never seen on a Gibson.
ksdaddy
Some J45s had that same dark top in the later 70s. I think it's gorgeous.
