Gibson archtop - I want one but need some advice

Heh folks,

I've been thinking about getting a vintage Gibby archtop.

I once owned a Cromwell (made by Gibson) but got rid of it

but I really liked it for fingerpicking blues and country.

I'm looking for a Gibson this time but don't can't go too,

too high. What would you suggest as a model to look for?

What price range should I expect? I don't want a collector's piece

just a solid player.

Thanks in advance

Geoff

An old L-50 is probably the best bang for the buck. You can pick one up for under a grand, and there is a ton of them out there. I wouldn't buy any lower models (L-30, L-48, etc), and the next step up will cost a couple grand. The L-50 is a great players guitar at a good price.

The L-50 is a good choice. In this market, though, you might be surprised at what's out there.

I just got my personal 'dream' guitar-- an early 30's roundhole L-4 for your price point. There were actually two of them that sold for $1500 - 1600 in the last month out here. A few years ago, the asking price for those guitars was in the $3500 range.

And I like those old Cromwells-- nothing wrong with them! (Trading Musician has a couple on their wall.)

I'm with you on the round hole L 4 - great guitar.

I'm on the look out for the L 50 (a nice looking one just

went for 1225.00 on ebay today). There are also a couple others

around. I took a look at the Cromwells at the Trading Musician.

They look a bit beat up from my perspective (lots of mojo).

One (at 1499.00) is described at being very good. However - I think

that's a bit much for a Cromwell. I guess I'd still like to have that

Gibson moniker on it.
