The difference between the SJ and the J45

Jkinnama's got it right.

Summarized, SJ has double parallelograms on fretboard, extra binding on neck, inlay on headstock, different pickguard (usually). J-45 does not have any of that. Both are mahogany. Soundwise they are similar.

AJ is forward braced, comes in maple or rosewood, arrowheads on the fretboard. Soundwise, the rosewood AJ has been compared to a D-28. They typically have a lot of volume.

As Karen rightly points out, AJs have common points with D28s. But there is a difference. The square bodied 28s have a booming bass and rumbling upper mids. Power and glory. The slope bodied AJ has clearer articulation all across the tonal range, so you a solid slap on the bass, good penetration on the mids, a fat top, and endless headroom, so you can play hard without breaking up (if that works for you, I have one f/s on the forum Trading Post).

J45/50s and So-Jos, oth, are going to have more of a thumpy bass (24.75 scale), thick mids, a sweet, breathy, top. Quicker overall decay. J
