RichCI
Black Flag were great live; unfortunately, the quality of their recordings tends to be a bit "Spot-ty" - both live and in the studio. I saw them a bunch of times back in the 80's and they were always great. RichCI
This dude named Spot did all of Black Flag's mixing, in the studio and live, and his production tastes are all over the place. Great band though; the uninitiated tend to think that Greg Ginn's guitar solos suck but they're composed very purposefully. He goes for very dissonant sounds and succeeds; I consider him to be more of a free form jazz guitarist than a punk rock guitar player but the two opinions meld very well, IMO. Check out a studio version then a live version of the same song - you'll hear that he isn't just riffing, but following a composition.
cwness
Or is it just me and these tunes sux? Mixing was realllllllllly bad; levels way off; but Rich did warn me. Nothing there I heard I liked. No tune or melody and i don't want to be initiated either. CW
