Twiz
Hey gang, I was wondering... I use my Epiphone Valve Jr. for practicing. I love the tone I get, but I try to be a good neighbor and roommate so I don't play very loud (I keep the volume knob around 7 or 8 o'clock & use a distortion pedal). Is keeping the volume that low bad for the tubes or am I okay? I was considering getting either an attenuator or doing a master volume mod. Has anyone had experience with this kind of thing? Thanks. deepblue
No, you arent hurting them. They love you for the your consideration! When you hear high volume tube distortion what you are hearing are tubes screaming for their lives. They are being pushed further then the want to be pushed. I use an attenuator (THD Hotplate). I get all the tube distortion I want at a lower volume.
Twiz
Sweet. Thanks for the info. I know a thing or two about electric guitars, but amplifiers are a whole different animal...haha. -As far as I know, there's a tiny little amp gnome living in there, twisting knobs and throwing switches to make the sound happen!
