Well, the quality definitely descended as time went by. However, some of the earlier releases had 'real' wood bodies, either alder or basswood, as opposed to the plywood bodies used on later editions. I'd say that if it has a non-ply body it's going to be a worthwhile project guitar... but I wouldn't waste a minute on the plywood ones.
