The Mysterious GG05... Serial Number

InsideMan

Recommended Posts

Sorry to start yet another thread on this subject, but I have looked all over the web to no avail.

I have a beautiful '05 Dot Natural that had been sitting (mysteriously) at the local Guitar Showcase for awhile unsold. I had been looking at the Dots at the time but was put off by the maple necks. (IMHO, a 335 should have a mahogany neck, but that's just me.)

So, when I saw this and played it in the store, I fell in love. But I haven't been able to crack the place of manufacture. The serial number is not on the back of the headstock--there is nothing there at all. Instead, it is on the Epiphone label inside -

Factory? Year Month Production No.

GG 05 07 0175

I got this much from GuitarDaterProject.org.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

i'll see what I can't glean from that. i'm psting to keep this bumped where i can see it. girlfriend is coming over, so I can't devote time to it right this instant, but serial numbers are kinda my thing, but I WILL say this...i'm not familiar with the "GG" prefix.

Any additional information would be very welcome. Pics even better.

Sorry it took so long to get back, Emetry.

Here are some pics. Please note that I have many talents--unfortunately, photography is not one of them.

As you can see, I added a 335 pickguard and bracket, Kluson keystone tuners, a TP-6, witchat knobs, and knob pointers. It plays great. I just can't place the GG serial number prefix. Cheers.

Like Emetry, I've seen only two other GG codes but no factory has been identified.

Two suggestions: contact Epiphone directly -- go back to the dealer you bought it from to see if they know

If you find out and post the info., I will add it to the factory codes thread.

Hit every BLUE NOTE baaaby..., I'm going to play on:-"

According to Gibson the serial number entered into their database did turn up an '05 Dot, however they have no clue what the GG is a prefix for. According to the rep I spoke with, there is no factory that has ever used the GG prefix.

A specialist from Epiphone will be contacting me with more info, i'll transcribe it here when I get it.

IM: I've never been a fan of the dot, though I don't know why. But for some reason, yours looks fantastic.

I really like the upgrades that you did. Simple but changes the entire complexion of the guitar.

If it sounds half as good as it looks, I'm sure you've got a winner.

I'm going to keep my eyes open for a natural lefty.

Enjoy
