Epiphone Dot Studio

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I just now realized what a cute 'little' guitar the Dot Studio is...

I mean:

- ES-335 Body

- Binding on body (some don't, which I don't understand, other factory??)

- Two Humbuckers

- the "nicely shaped" F-holes which are rare on dots

- No dots or anything on the fretboard (which is cool for someone excentric who wants to put his/her name on there), so

definitely customizable.

- Relatively cheap

Are they still available? Cause I'm looking for a Guitar that doesn't produce as much feedback as my trusty casino (unfortunately =( ).

Anyone have an opinion about these guitars/this particular model?

Nick

I just got a used one. I like it a lot.

First the downside.

Seems to scratch very easily.. not really like scratches, it just mars. There's almost no finish on this thing.

Ok, that's the downside.

Now for the upside.

First, since this was modified when I got it, I can't speak about the stock pickups.

it's got gfs mean 90 in the bridge, a p 90 humbuck size, and a dream 180 humbuck in the neck.

currently that's wired for single coil. sounds pretty dark for a single coil.

The mean 90 however sounds very good.

I believe I'll put another humbuck size p90 in the neck since I have one.

The guitar plays great. Epis, I've had five or six here-counting the two I already own, tend to have a few very minor fret problems..

usually a little hinky in a couple of spots, high frets. But this thing is remarkably good.

I already tweaked the rod and lowered the action. I can get a little rattle if I lay into it, but no big deal at all.

Plays very good. Neck feels good. Not warbly or weak as some, even gibsons, I've played.

In short, for three hundred bucks, this has to be a lot of guitar, even with stock pickups.

The tuners were swapped for grovers, chrome, so I don't know what they ship with. But I think grovers, just black, aren't they?

I was debating about the finish, just for cosmetic reasons, but now that I've been around it a couple of days I'm sure I'll give it a very light finish sanding and poly coat it.

it's just not thick enough. which is odd for an epi!

My sherato also has p90s, and I've gotten to really like this darker sounding guitar quite a bit. I'm sure the guitar iteself is contributing to the tone. It's also darker acoustically, even though it has lighter strings than my sheri.

I just can't see why anyone wouldn't want one.

Mine has Jinho tuners. The worn finish takes polish rather nicely - I thought about refinishing the body but

I like it now - especially because it doesn't show fingerprints like a shiny finish. I also considered adding

additional tone/volume pots but after a little pickup height adjustment, I find the single controls very

convenient (that wasn't the case with the stock pickups, however).

Hi folks, thanks for the quick replys

It appears, that this model had some modifications during it's lifetime (mods made by the factory)...

I've seen some dot stuios WITH cream binding and some WITHOUT binding (which I don't prefer, cause the binding makes it look thin and handsome, whereas without it looks abit thick...)

here's some examples:

With Binding:

And without binding:
