Strumbone
I'm considering getting a used Valve Jr. to mod into an outboard reverb for my home made tube amp, using the Bitmo spring reverb kit. Anyone have experience with this mod? Thanks.
TWANG
Nope. But it does get pretty fair reviews. It certainly can't be as bad as the vj hot rod.
Strumbone
Is that the new one with built-in reverb? I looked at some gut shots of the vjr, and some upgrades from turretboards, and now I'm considering getting a used head, installing some upgrade caps, resistors, and OT before adding the spring tank. TWANG
I don't know what he does for that reverb conversion. I'm sure he changes several components. and people say it works.. the vj hot rod simply stinks to high heaven. It's not bad reverb. It isn't reverb at all. and it's a real shame. For instance, if they'd left out the reverb or put in a digital.. they'd have had a hit as the amp has two preamp tubes.. enough for good low volume gain and a nice tone stack. with or without reverb they would have kicked the vjs rep up several notches. but this thing. this monstrosity. this modders nightmare with little hope of ever becoming more than functional. bad move. go for the bitmo conversion and I think you might have yourself a pretty nice unit. Get those Sewatt maniacs in there with ya.. and it will be even better, I'm sure. Got my tone pot fixed. I'll post pics of the amp. she looks great. And sounds really good though I did everything but add a new OT. I went with big orange spragues in this one.. but otherwise the usual marshall type mods. tone vol gain standby fuse holder. and red pearl faceplate with brushed aluminum knobs.
