I love old school country! My favorites are guys like Ernest Tubb, Hank Thompson, Faron Young, Hank Williams, Lefty Frizzell. Even though it sounds like your wife will be doing the singing, a lot of those guys songs could easily be sang by a woman if you change a couple words around. Kitty Wells, Jean Shepard, Patsy Cline are some female artists from the era she may want to emulate. Patsy Cline was more late 50s / early 60s, but she also has a lot of songs that are standards today. If rockabilly is what you're after, Wanda Jackson is someone you definitely want to research. She had a very successful career singing rockabilly songs like "Lets Have A Party" and "Hot Dog That Made Him Mad", and then went on to record country standards like "Right or Wrong" and "Tears Will Be The Chaser For Your Wine" YouTube is your best friend, check out some of the old school stuff by the artists I've mentioned. I'm posting a few links below to get you started. Good luck to you and your wife! :-) Kitty Wells - It Wasn't God Who Made Honkytonk Angels Jean Shepard - Second Fiddle To An Old guitar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QveyV6U8oQo Loretta Lynn - Honky Tonk Girl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NydrA8EpYWo Patsy Cline - Walkin' After Midnite Ernest Tubb - Don't Look Now http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ag6jh_Lv7Tw Hank Thompson - Blackboard of My Heart Patty Loveless - Why Baby why (an old George Jones song) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pdCBjz1Drzo Patty Loveless - If Teardrops Were Pennies (an old Carl Smith song) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSbZfWrdkq4
dwe82
The Patty Loveless links I posted in the last reply reminded me of a couple of CD's I highly recommend. Martina McBride - Timeless http://www.amazon.com/Timeless-Martina-McBride/dp/B000BDGW6M/ Patty Loveless - Sleepless Nights http://www.amazon.com/Sleepless-Nights-Patty-Loveless/dp/B001C0NMXY Tanya Tucker - My Turn http://www.amazon.com/My-Turn-Tanya-Tucker/dp/B001SZ27WU All three of these CD's showcase women singing a lot of old-school country songs from the 40s through the 60s. I own all three of these CD's and I highly recommend them. Here is a collection of songs by the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson. http://www.amazon.com/Queen-Rockabilly-Wanda-Jackson/dp/B00004WGED

Hungrycat
were trying to get more gigs and... im in kentucky You might find some gigs here is Nashville. From what I understand there is a large faction of the country scene here that really hates what passes for 'country' now.
brianh
Anything off Rosanne Cash's new album The List. In fact, anything off of her father's 100-song list would work (if you can find it).
