Vintage Sheraton/Riviera specs.. Anyone know?

Recommended Posts

Do vintage Sheratons & Rivieras made in the States (during the 50s-60s) have different wood than the ones you can buy today? Ex. The 1965 Lennon Casinos have (maple' date='birch, maple, birch, maple) for the body as apposed to laminate maple on the Korean Casinos offered today...[/quote']

I don't believe they've changed that much as far as the woods used. They all have the traditional 335-style construction. Maple-ply bodies w/Maple centerblock. All except the Sheraton have Mahogany necks. The Sheraton has a Maple neck IIRC...

What specifically has changed though? If Its a difference between laminate wood vs plys of wood that has changed, thats a HUUUUGE difference. I own 2 Korean Casinos (modded w/USA Electronics/pups) & a Lennon 65. The difference in tone between the 2 Koreans & the Lennon is night & day... I just dont wanna get stuck buying a new Rivi or a Sheri & then find out the originals were made with different wood... Im kinda a freak about having what sounds the best. And laminate wood eats poop poo IMO..

Isn't "laminate" just a marketing euphemism for plywood? Do you mean the difference between laminate and a solid carved top?

As far as plywood top guitars go, even if two otherwise identical guitars were made from the same exact tree, there are too many other variables in guitar construction (curing, glue type & bracing patterns for instance) that would influence the acoustic tone of a Sherry or Riv made decades apart, in different countries, different factories and constructed by different personnel.

Also, unlike Casinos which are true hollow bodies, Sheratons and Rivieras have center blocks that run the length of the guitar, so not much of a comparison as there will be FAR less overall acoustic resonance. And If I'm not mistaken, all standard MIK Casinos are finished in poly, and the Lennon '65 is nitro on the sunburst version, and even thinner nitro on the blondie.

In any case, Epiphone hasn't made any semi or hollow solid-carved top electric guitars for many years IFAIK.
