I think so Bill - the lacquer looked very thick - as soon as I sanded it down it sounds more woody and seems to breathe a bit more - will never sound like an expensive guitar but IMHO sounds quite good - also sounds a bit louder. doesn't sound like a guitar you can get for around £80!
