tweed1
I occasionally wander over the the Acoustic forum, from the Electric side, and thought that I would throw out a question. Six months ago, I decided to downsize my collection of guitars and got rid of an acoustic, an Ibanez 330 clone and a Gibson MelodyMaker and replace them all with a Casino. My thought was, the Casino would be a good comprimise . I'm not sorry about my decision, I love the Casino and play it almost as much as my Ric 360-12 and more than my Strat. But I'm finding that I miss having an acoustic. The Casino isn't quite loud enough when I jam with others playing acoustics. So, I've been looking at the EJ 160e and even the Texan and Hummingbird. Whatever I get, it'll need a pickup, either stock or added afterwards. Don't want to spend a lot of money, but I also realize that for the most part, you get what you pay for. Can anyone weigh in on the EJ 160e and value vs country of manufacture? Are the Indonesian ones worth looking at? Or, the Chinese ones? I've been very happy with the last two Korean guitars I've bought, so do I keep looking for one of those? I haven't looked for an acoustic for 20 years, so I'm a little out of the loop on what's good and what's not so good. I just need something to bang around on. Thanks. el capitan
I've had a Gibson J160e and an Epi EJ160E.They weren't that great acoustically or electric. I recently got an Inspired by Texan-this is the real deal!
wiggy
Can't comment on the EJ160E but the build and finish quality of my Indonesian made EJ200CE is faultless (and I do mean faultless!) Like all Epiphone production there can be huge variations between guitars as a Hummingbird I looked at when I bought my EJ200 was quite simply the biggest piece of s**t I've had the misfortune to pick up - badly finished inside and out with rough bracing in places and glues runs all over the place. Only way to guarantee a good one no matter where the build origin is to get it in your hands.
tweed1
Thank you both for the responses. The collection of guitars that I have right now has slowly gone unintentionally Beatles oriented. A Casino, a Ric 360-12 and a Strat (Ok, maybe not so much). I started looking at Texans about two years ago but found the 160e to usually be closer to my price range that I've set for myself. I'll probably just save up a little more and look for a used Texan. Any recommendations on years/country of manufacture, etc?
Dodgermod
you haven't looked at the Ispired By Texan? Here they're £300 or so where the EJ160e is £350 - depends what you're looking for I suppose - I have the EJ160e and play it acoustically but teh pickup is designed for electric strings whereas the IB Texan has an acoustic pickup. tweed1
Ya, I should have been a little more specific. When I say Texan, I'm speaking of the Inspired by. I don't have the money to buy an actual Texan, although I'd love to have one.
milod
All kidding aside... I think I'd go back to the "don't buy until you try" response somebody made. On the Gibson forum one pro picker noted how a student showed up for a classical master class and the teacher was flown away by the tone. Asked to play the thing and it sounded thin and yucky. Especially, I think, with acoustics, a lot has to do with your technique and what you like in terms of tone and even setup. With all due respect otherwise, not matter what guitar I'm playing, I think I sound like me. OTOH, I think it's also a good idea to have somebody else at least play some chords and individual strings across the "living room" from you to see what you think that way too... As an old guy <grin> frankly I don't care if there's some glue inside you can see. I want playability and a tone that's appropriate for what and how I play. You're definition of that last will probably be different. So... play before you pay. m
el capitan
" I sound like me" How true-Ido! I was wary of the IB TEXAN,as I have a Macca MIJ,but now I've got one I love it!
