Tom murphy aged?

Hi,

I've bought a R9 lespaul and the seller told me it was a Tom Murhy aged guitar.

But i only have a signature of tom murphy on the backplate cover and no specific COA for that (i've got the usual COA of gibson..no more...)

I've read that Tom murphy signed guitar he made into the control cavity with is initial TM + a specific number.

Is it right? Did he do it for guitar aged from 1999?

Thanks for you're help.

On the Murphy aged guitars that I have owned, the guitars were not signed by Tom. The Cert. or COA was signed by Tom and it stated it was a Tom Murphy aged guitar. Maybe back in the early days (and maybe even now) he signed inside the control cavity or one of the pickup cavities. Gibson Custom Service would be able to tell you if it was Murphy aged if you call them and provide the serial number. It may even require you to send a photo in an email. I have several back plates just like that one that are signed by Tom. My best guess is that you do not have a true Murphy aged R9, and I could be wrong. You should have a cert with Murphy's name on it stating that it was done by Tom. The last guitar I had that was Murphy aged did not have anything in any of the cavities and it was new from the dealer as a custom ordered, Murphy aged guitar, verified by serial number and by the paperwork with the guitar. Murphy signs back plates like that at shows and dealer events and they are not uncommon. Call Gibson Customer Service with the serial number and see if they show it as a Murphy aged guitar. 1-800-4GIBSON (1-800-444-2766)

From My understanding TM left Gibson sometime in 1994, so most other guitars would have to be some sort of special guitar, (I haven't heard of him signing any interier part of a guitar since he worked there). Whether is was just a regular RI or one of the Artist Sig guitars. They cost more and hold their value as time goes by. You have been given good advice . You should call Gibson with as much info as possible . They will help you if they can .

I have an Aged & Signed guitar and it has nothing, anywhere on it to indicate he did the Aging. Only Gibson's web-site states that he did the work. I guess it's to exspencive Now, for Gibson to put the Sig of TM on the COA. That's really just sad . for what they charge for those guitars.

I love my Gibby's but come on .... How difficult is it at those prices for a collector guitar? Who's responcable for that Idea anyway ?

Henry ? are you listening ?

Say, How about some pictures of that guitar ? We like our Guitar Porn here , ya know.

hi,

thanks for all your answer and sorry for late reply...

so i've received the answer of gibson:

"The guitar appears to be original. The serial number is registered in our database also to an R9 in heritage cherry sunburst, aged, with nickel hardware, from 2001, made at the Custom Shop in Nashville, Tennessee."

but they can't confirm its a murphy one, only it has been aged and send to Japan for sale.

So probably it's a murphy/yamono one...

In 2001 I do not think Gibson was doing in-house aging and Murphy was doing all of it. Most likely if it was going to Japan, it would have been Murphy aged. I have heard that Murphy keeps a record of the ones he ages so contacting he might be the best answer. I do think it might be a Murph/Yamano too.
