Graham
Hi All, I'm a new member and this is my first post . I have a question regarding the Epi EJ200CE. I have one of these guitars and really like it but I'm trying to confirm where the top is solid or laminate. It looks solid, I can see the grain running through it around the soundhole and Epi's web site says its solid but every dealer sight I look at at refers to the top as 'select spruce'. What is select spruce? and does my EJ200 have a solid top? Thanks

RIX
Graham, Unless your model number has a "S" ,i.e. EJ200SCE or AJ200SCE, in it you have a laminate top. Select Spruce Top is a nice way of saying laminate top, but it is usually a better quality. And sometimes you can't tell until you use a magnifying glass to inspect the end grain of the sound hole. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the feedback. I know Epi used to make an EJ200SCE but that's been withdrawn as far as I'm aware, certainly not on the website anymore. They had a bridge more like the Gibi J200. The website states that the EJ200CE and EJ200 both have solid tops. I've looked at the end grain around the sound hole on mine and it does appear to be solid. Mines around 6 months old, I'm wondering if after the SCE was withdrawn whether they upgraded the CE to solid top.

Epi uses identification like "S" (for Solid) when a model comes in both a laminate and solid option at the same time. The "S" is used to differentiate the two, so the customer knows which he/she is getting. When the top is only available as either as a solid or a laminate, Epiphone usually does not use a letter in the model number to indicate which it has. The published specs inform the customer what features the guitar has. For instance, there are no "S" designations in any Masterbilt model, or in the Inspired by '64 Texan, or in the EJ-160E, and they all have solid tops. There is no need to indicate this with an "S" as the solid top is a standard feature of the model, and not an option or variation. Red
