hi13ts Posted October 2, 2016 Share Posted October 2, 2016 Friends, I'm thinking of fitting a B7 on my Les Paul Custom via the Vibramate device. I've done it years ago on my old Studio Faded and I remember string tension slinkier than my other Les Paul was at the time, but can't say definitively if that was due to the Bigsby. I like my tension a little stiffer so anything that will slacken it would not be ideal. Is this a symptom of having a Bigsby? Do you think the Vibramate spoiler might help alleviate that possibility because it would shorten string length? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
capmaster Posted October 2, 2016 Share Posted October 2, 2016 As long as the same string gauges are used, the tension won't change. However, when bending strings, part of the bending force will be eaten up by the vibrato suspension. This means you will have to push the string(s) farther sideward to achieve the same add of tension and thus effect on pitch. I know it very well from my vibrato guitars, and I use .010"-.046" with them for that reason. That means less string tension, but they need only a little more displacement than the .011"-.050" I play on my hardtail guitars. Hope this helps. The path of depression for fretting them seems too small for that, and I still don't feel it when doing finger vibratos. I just compared a Floyd Rose Strat of mine and a Nashville Power Telecaster of mine set up for a bandmate and therefore as a hardtail guitar also strung with 10s. They have same scale length, neck shapes, fretboard material and radius, into the bargain are close in weight, and finally the setups are the same in every respect.
