  1. Great article - lots of stuff I didn't know.  Which there had at least been a top of the hat to Henry J.  He also 'saved' Gibson.   But, yes, he got caught up in the 'diversify' fad and went into home electronics instead of focusing on musical instruments.

  2. Yeah. Not having OSHA, Fidh and Wildlife, EEOC, etc breathing down your necks lets you focus on quality.
“new hi tech equipment “?  The label says “Handcrafted”.     And who designed and bought that equipment?   “Chen Bo”. Or Gibson?

:-k must be frustrating for Chinese producers of anything intended for international consumption - there they are with state of the art facilities and the cash to do whatever, and they are expected to make whatever they produce based on it being cheap, cheap, and cheap - oh, and better make it of a lesser quality too because that's expected by the consumer.

"hey boss, with this new hi-tech equipment we can make the best (fill blank) in the world!"

"sorry, Chen Bo, this is for western markets - please just use the cheap materials and program the robots to include annoying defects. Yeah I know, I know....look, its what they expect"

  3. I would think it would be perfect for that.  Avoiding situations where you might damage your 'high end' J45, but bringing one that feels and sounds almost identical, down to the headstock shape and model designation.  Comes with a hardshell case, where many IBGs don't.  I assume, with a thermally aged red spruce top - these are made in Japan where the quality is higher, as opposed to China.  If you have a need for and can afford a 'backup' guitar, that is much more than a 'beater' - this is what I'd go for.

  4. I've found that  if I play my j45 exclusively for several weeks, when I pick up my H'Bird tv - it does sound ...different.  My aural memory is comparing it to the j45, and screaming - THAT'S not what we're expecting in here (between my ears).  So, I have to play it for several days to re-program my brain into recognizing that 'not all guitars sound like the last one you heard'.   Imagine if you played a 12 stringer every day for a year and then sat down with a j45.  Non Compis Mentis. "not of sound mind".    Give your new H'Bird time to get broken in. And remember - it's an acquired taste.  Like Irish Whisky.  It was designed to be different - IE  to 'sound' different.   I think sometimes we return perfectly great guitars within the return policy window because our egos tell us  'You screwed up, it doesn't sound right." Buyers remorse.   Sometimes we just mover them on after letting them sit in their cases for a couple of years.   Instead, we should put our other guitars in their cases and give the newbie center stage and plenty of air time.

    Sheepdog1969,

    Thanks, but no thanks.

The game bores me to tears, and I have absolutely no interest in it at any level: NCAA or NBA.

I guess I appreciate sports where it seems there is a semblance of tactics and strategy.   Throwing the ball back and forth until one of you gets a clear shot at shooting at the basket is all I see happening.   Maybe because I've never had an interest in spending the time required to understand the fine points of the game.  My father loved to watch it on TV after he retired.

  6. Nope.  It's because 'attic'  is too close to the protagonist "Atticus Finch"  in the Pulitzer prize winning novel  "To Kill a Mockingbird" , which has been banned in some school districts.

  7. We use to have several threads, spanning a couple of years' time, arguing ....er, I mean weight the pros and cons, of whether and how much of the rosette should be covered by the p/g.   At the time, if I recall, the Mother Ship was cranking out new gits that had them mostly covered, and some with slightly off radiuses.   I think we can take credit for getting that problem fixed.  And the glue drop pandemic at the turn of the century.     FWIW -  I think the thin fire-strip guards are going to catch on too...  But they need to be around 80-20 - mostly stripe with only a little see-through.   Sort of like 'more cowbell'.   Engraved p/g s are nice to look at - but I'm always leery of wearing off the panzer paint.

But everything was in black and white back then, so, you know, I miss them days.

True Dat.    Our son (now in his 40s) asked us, back in the 80s, when he realized many of the movies and TV shows from our era were in Black & White,   if the entire world was black and white and it had only recently been 'colorized'.    Never occurred to him that it was only the recording devices that were at fault.   He really got confused later when a teacher told him that dogs can't see color.

I felt strongly when I was younger (2 -3 years ago) here, that Mods should specify what post/language, etc. caused the deletion of a thread - precisely as Old Shep explained - so we can all learn from our mistakes.   Now I believe if that happened, the offenders, or their supporters would seize on the details to argue, and only escalate the pain.     Why has this forum gone down in 'popularity"  ?   An excellent question  I wish we had an insightful answer to, so we could get back to where we were.   My vote, is a little friction, humor makes it easier for us to also deal with the Serial Number and String Choice issues.

    Funny you should ask that.

I have acquired a vintage Sunbeam toaster, and the serial number is 6341088.

Does this mean it's a 1963 model, made on April 1st, or am I reading this wrong.
The guy who sold it to me said that April 1963 Sunbeam toasters are very collectible.
    That's why I paid $1,800 for it.

    I hope I didn't get ripped off.

Those are notorious for needing crumb tray resets and not staying in tune.  You should have gotten  a Mexican made Tortilla Toaster.

Actually the Egyptian pyramids were built by a skilled working class and they were compensated.

The race bating I hear is coming from other circles trying to tie the accident to DEI .

Nah. They were built by aliens.  Illegal probably.  From another galaxy.  Flown in by the Pharo.

  11. Only have 1 of those - velcro attached battery holder - and it's never fallen out. Knock on wood.  (Koa for you cork sniffers..)   I'm guessing if the velcro adhesive is applied before the wood is wiped down real well, there will be a minute amount of  dust - including sawdust - that'll affect the attachment.  So, I'd be sure to wipe the wood off really well before trying to re-attach adhesive tape.   2nd point -  I've found Gorilla Duct tape  is really, REALLY strong.  If you can figure out a way to double it up -  I'd bet you dollars to donuts, it'd be permanent under normal operating conditions.  But, since you've already reported fixing the problem.  This suggestion is a (half) day late and a dollar short.  Dollar not being worth more than 75 cents now.

In WallyWorld yesterday - to purchase ONE  9v RayoVac battery - price?   $6.74!!!

  12. I purchased an LG1 in '64 for $125.  I would think yours cost about the same back then.    In today's dollars - that would roughly equate to $1250.  The minimum wage back then was $1.25.  I had to put in long hours at the local grocery store to save up for it.   My actual  'student' guitar originally cost around $25 new from a department store - a "Stella".        There are a dozen or so LG-0s on REVERB and they range in price from $900 to $1500, depending on condition.

East Germany is no longer its own country, it's just Germany now. Where you been?

That explains that framed piece of spray painted concrete I have had hanging in my home for 25 years with the little brass plaque that reads "Berlin Wall  1961 - 1989".

  14. I've had an epiphany = never found an 'aha' moment with any of the dozens of strings I've tried.   Some were noticeably better, but none were 'great'.  Until I put a set of Elixir 80/20 Phosphor/Bronze Nanoweb medium lights on my 2010 SJ200.  Just made it sound unearthly.  Been on there a year and a half.  No plan to take them off anytime soon. Some flaking, but they still sound other-worldly.   Obviously, I'm not good at describing 'tone'.  But I know what I love when I hear it.

  15. I read once that Emmylou Harris in an interview said something to the effect "There is nothing that can compare to a fifth fret  A bar chord on an SJ200."    I'm surprised by the significant difference in size between the SJ200 alongside the L200.  I saw one in a case once at Sam Ash. Didn't ask to see it.  Just seems like it would have a different level of 'fullness'.  Breadth and Depth and Balance.

  16. I had a very good guitar student for 4 years  around 5 years ago.  She sells insurance now on the phone, but I had lunch with her last year. She says her “career”  is “ pole dancing”. And says they are trying to get THAT recognized as a sport and into the Olympics.  The Greeks would be so proud.
