Nice for you, ZW but the original poster just paid about $5K for a brand new J45 Banner replica and Gibson don't seem to be catching the problems at QC....or they let a percentage through for financial reasons.....

OR - as I opined earlier - it is an abrasion that occurred AFTER it left Bozeman.

  2. In a word,  yes.  I think you got a True Vintage, a model they retired and replaced with 'Vintage'. Standards are different. Modern Classic, etc.  Go to the section above "Acoustic Guitars" and lookup 'round shouldered' and you'll see a dozen versions.  Half are just 'color and cosmetic' differences - not what's under the hood.  And that's just for this year, not the past five.

You Gibson fan’s accept sub par QA. It’s not mine so do what you want with it.

Why do you guys defend Gibson’s sub par QA. I just don’t understand. You think that’s the only guitar they’ve ever made that sounds good come on.

Photos magnified 10X  to see something not visible to the naked eye ...   Issues that may have been caused after the guitar left Bozeman...  And - not knowing what we're actually looking at ...    Nitro there, but no stain?   Is it the stain gone as well as the nitro?  Scraped off ?    Both never applied seems far-fetched. ?  Polishing compound a possibility.  Abrasion damage another possibility:  where might it have happened?  At Bozeman, at the retailers, or even by the new owner, not realizing it?   The location is one where that could happen.   To assume Gibson is somehow not applying stain and nitro to an edge there, is farfetched.    And if they did  ...Thousands of new Gibson acoustics being purchased every week.   And  this forum is where we hear about the 'defects' .  Probably one or two a week:  "is this normal?"   Yes!   This particular 'issue' is not sufficient to label Gibson's QA   'sub-par'.

  4. Jaw Harp?    cause of 52%  of chipped front teeth below the Mason Dixon Line.

Point is - a  ukulele is not in the same class as a flat top, arch top...  Every time I pick my uke up, I put it down frustrated after 10 minutes, and grab a guitar.   Or course, there are always exceptions: Iz Kamakawiwo'ole  was one in a hundred million in his mastery of the uke to complement his equally unique voice.

I understand that you were not able to share the enthusiasm of the author of the book, and that’s okay. Sometimes interest in a certain topic can be ambiguous for different people.

I need to find out where to become that tactful.   'Dale Carnegie' didn't take I guess.

I had just gotten stationed in Great Lakes for ‘A’ school, and you could not escape the song Sweet Child O Mine  it was always on.

Basic Electricity & Electronics ??   Squeeked through.  "Sitting on the Dock of The Bay" was the signature song when I was there.  And that headache maker -  "Hey Jude".  Nah, nah, nah nahnanana.......Weekends drinking non-luxury beer  in Kenosha.

I don't think Gibson Records is owned by or "under" BMG in any way - they are just the distributor for the label, IIRC.

I apologize.   I mis-interpreted what I read.   The press release from BMG called it a "strategic label partnership'.     Obviously, I have no idea what that means !   Thanks for the clarification.

I am a full-time Gibson employee. My job title is Senior Editor, Gibson Brands. Do I have "connections?" I've been working in the music industry in various capacities for decades, and I know a lot of people, so if that's what you consider "connections," then I guess the answer is yes.

Do I get any special favors from Cesar? No. No more than any other employee. Personal opinion time again - in my opinion, Gibson is very good to their employees and treats us well.

As far as drinking anyone's Kool-Aid, I've never done that. I call things as I see them, and I will do so whenever I post here, and I will always be as clear as I can regarding when I am doing something as an official employee of Gibson Brands (for example, when doing Site Admin tasks here) and when I am expressing my personal opinions.

As a Gibson employee, believe it or not, for several years, it used to be part of my job to fairly and impartially review products from many different brands. My instructions at the time were to remain absolutely editorially neutral, and I tried to be as fair to Fender when I reviewed their products or announced their new products as I was to Yamaha, or Warm Audio, Universal Audio, or Epiphone, or anyone else. I still have great relationships with people from all of those brands (and many more) today. And when I reviewed something from Gibson, I announced my connection to them at the start of the review, and tried to be just as fair - and when called for, critical of issues I spotted in Gibson Brands products as I was with products from other brands - even direct competitors.

While I do currently have about seven Gibson Brands guitars in my collection, and have had dozens of others over the years, most of them were purchased before I became a Gibson employee. I don't buy gear that I don't like and/or won't use.

Sgt. Pepper  has a history of liking to lock horns with anyone and everyone.  He regularly detracts from all things 'Gibson'.   I am sure he would like nothing more than to have the entire Gibson Forum shut down: since Martin doesn't have one -  Gibson shouldn't.

  9. I wish I had a nickel for every Beauty Contestant that asked her manager  "Why do I have to keep wishing for Whirled Peas?"

There are a lot of 'Big Lies'  (the check's in the mail,  and that other one), but the biggest - is when people in power tell us we should believe in World Peace.    Give Peace a Chance, Imagine,  etc.  Opens the minds door to all sorts of other fabrications.

  10. I think it would be great if there were a finish that lasted 50 years, did not impede sound transfer and did not get haze.  But, I'm guessing there isn't and Gibson went for the first two, assuming we could deal with the latter.   People have slightly different body chemistry - so some get more haze.  Some play longer and get more.   Some don't wipe off their guitar after playing.  Some can't figure out why there's orange dust on their fingerboard every time they have a bag of Cheetos before playing.   I draw the line at spit-shining my guitar for 2 hours though.

  11. In Bozeman - 6 or 7 years ago -  those here who had been on tours assured us there was no "Custom Shop"  location.  Just a 'Special Handling' concept for models with special specs.   Still followed the same processes on the same equipment and assembly line.  I suppose if the change were only color, tuners, p/g or other cosmetic things - they wouldn't both calling it "CS".   Because that would water down the Marketing Value of the term.  Since Bozeman went through an expansion a few years ago - they may have created a separate physical space.  And then there's the 'Limited Edition' runs.   Ours is not to reason why...
