  1. Probably a crack in the finish, but can't tell for sure.  If it's  a finish crack, it would have been caused by whacking the top of the nut against something.  That's probably what happened at some time.  The crack is at 45 degrees to the direction of the impact.  That's what happens when brittle things crack.

  2. Removed the covering and the Gibson emblem and glued and filled some things.  Some of the plywood on the bottom has delaminated and had some internal plies rattling around.  I superglued the plywood back together and I think I stopped the rattle.  A little more gluing and filling and it will be ready for new tolex.  I got some authentic brown Gibson style tolex from Mojotone and I'm going to use a Fender flat leather handle, which is the exact same size and fits the same holes as the old one.  I'll probably put new rubber feet on there.  The emblem is in good shape.  Waiting to hear from Weber to see if they can recone the speaker.

Sort of ironic - we get a 'day'  in the middle of Pride Month.  (Or is it counter-intuitive?)   Either way, got to be with my 4 kids, we were at our 5th and last day at the shore - South Padre Island.

You have grandkids, right?  None here.

When you say sell your Standard do you mean that red SG?

No.  I have a '19 LP Standard Cherry Burst that I'm going to sell.  It has low profile frets and one of those fretboards that varies from 12" to 15" radius.  It's weight relieved and 8lb 3 oz.

Great,, After much procrastination, I finally got a hold of AES where we figured I need either the T1750E or the EP, for paper. Very close in price, 1/2 that of a Mecury Magnetics, & I'm just not sure if there's ANY PERFORMANCE DIFFERENCE between the E & the EP, or if it's simply the material, which no one will ever see. Again, it's for my Gibson GA6, which I assume is push-pull, & as per my tech, in need an 8kohm center tap to feed my 8ohm Jensen..."

Paper insulation is the authentic way to make them, like they were originally.  I tend to favor maintaining original specs, because it can effect the value.

  6. So I guess I'm keeping it.  I played it with the band and it was so awesome that I almost played with my foot up on an amp.  I put in a treble bleed circuit and changed the pickups.  Can't live without a treble bleed.  And I decided to change out the stock '61 pickups for a set of Fralin Pure PAF's that I have, which are a 59 type pickup, with alnico 2 magnets and more dynamic range to them.  The '61's are hotter and more creamy sounding, with alnico 5 magnets.  Really hot for the neck position.  I'll put them in my '19 Standard, which is going to get sold.  The '19  had '61s in it originally.  Anyway, my hands are sore from playing too much, so that's good.  Time for strap lock buttons.

Wow, the flame over that grain!

Just curious, what was it, that was not perfect on the original setup?

The setup was pretty good.  I just had to tighten down the trussrod maybe 1/8 turn to get the relief pretty flat.  It's almost flat enough.  I'll probably need a little more tightening here in the next week or two.  It seems like all Gibsons need that once they're strung up and being played in.  I want that relief to eventually be as little as possible, and it takes a few weeks to settle in.  So far, so good.

Very nice, are Gibson's coming with Elixir strings now?

I ordered a set with the guitar.  I tried some after RCT's review and I like the Nanoweb ones.  I'm putting them on right now.

  9. I finally started working on this BR-6 basket case that I bought from a music store owner.  It had been recovered in peach colored vinyl upholstery covering, with upholstery tacks holding it in place.  It needs new Gibson style brown tolex and a regular Fender style flat leather handle.

I recapped it, including the coupling caps and electrolytics, rewired a couple of weird mods that somebody had done and put in a new volume pot.  Fired it up, brought up the voltage and it works.  I need to change out the cathode resistor today and get the bias down a little.

I'll have to check out the speaker closely and see if it needs a recone.  It looks o.k. as far as I can see.

I paid $300 without even knowing if the power transformer worked.  Hopefully I can get the better part of $1,000 once it's done.
