that was my take too  The Epi's are nice, but if the budget can avail, just pass GO, collect the $200 and get the real deal.

Amen!  I totally agree.  As already alluded to, it all depends on the person playing the guitar, but in my opinion (and my opinion doesn’t mean I’m right and someone else is wrong) there’s no way I’d choose an Epi over a Gibson.  I’ve had an Epi EJ200 and it was nice for the money, but in no way was it close to a J200.  Had an Epi J45 (don’t think it was called a J45 at the time.  Can’t recall the model name)—-anyway, definitely a decent instrument, but it wasn’t a J45.  Yes, a Gibson guitar is typically several times more expensive than the various brands/models aimed at being a copy, but there really is (at least to me) something that is different and better in a real Gibson.  An imitation, no matter how nice, is not a Gibson.  There’s a special quality in a Gibson that is largely unnoticed, except by the player and maybe a handful in the audience,   It might be the appearance, the sound, or maybe just the feel, but whatever it is it’s pretty damn cool to have a Gibson between you and your audience.……If you can afford the Gibson, get it!……Just my view.

  2. Things are opening-up around here.   My regular gig for over eight years started-up (inside) about two months ago and they’re opening a new location later this year.  I play there tomorrow at noon.  Also, two new coffee shops have opened here in Independence and both are within 3 miles of me.   Still waiting for Caribou Coffee to restart.   Wineries have started again with their music.  Also, playing a nursery (trees, shrubs) in two weeks.  It’s kind of turning into a situation of “How many gigs do you want to play?”

  3. Went up to GC today.  First time there I think since around last New Year’s.  Just don’t buy much there anymore.  One Gibson, a 2018 J45 Rosewood, 5 Martins, and a shitload of Taylors in their high dollar room..  Seems like most music gear is getting more expensive, at least at GC.   Anyway, I needed a new music stand and harmonica holder.

I think the "records" part of the name is just for market effect.  Most of their stuff will mostly just probably be available for "streaming and download".  And of course, for a nominal fee.

Yep!  Just follow the money!  It would be so easy for them to do something “grassroots,” that the average guy would automatically identify with.  Someone who plays bars, wineries, coffeehouses in their own area talking about their Gibson and playing some Cash, Dylan, Lovin’ Spoonful, Baez, Lightfoot.  Doesn’t have to be real technical, although Gibson could supply that at the start.  The rest could be the “average Joe” doing a couple songs and telling what why he loves playing his Gibson.  I would watch/listen to that.

Like I stated previously, I'm all for that.  Most people already know the long established artists that use Gibson instruments, so showcasing talented unknowns who also use them is not only a good showcase for promoting new talent,   but also for promoting Gibson as not only a maker of good instruments(they hope)  but also philanthropic enough to help up and coming artists.  Having a "company with a heart" rep never hurts.  [wink]

Yeah, doing something like this could get them on the news, along with increasing sales.  I think a lot of guitar pickers would be talking about it.

What’s the point of spending a ton of money signing guys who are already famous, have their own labels or are already signed?

Exactly!  I’d love to see them do something like NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert, focused on average, unknown folks who perform one or two songs with their Gibson guitar.  I’ll be very surprised if it happens, but it would be cool if it did (but again, I doubt that it will).

  7. If they’re in their original packaging, I use them.   Don’t know if I ever consider how long I might have had them.  I prefer Martin SPs, but if they’re not available, I’ll use whatever is.

I loved the sound of that same guitar when I played it in shops…

Let me just share a story though. Almost three years back I bought a used J45 TV from a guy online. When it arrived the action was ok, but it buzzed on some higher frets. If the action  was raised, it was hard and tight low down. I was frustrated. I don’t have tools to measure neck relief, but I realized visually that the neck had too much bow.

I took it to a fantastic luthier, and they said the prior owner played with different saddles and the truss rod too much. My luthier first corrected the neck angle. Pretty straight. Then he cut a new saddle. Taller. Corrected nut slots. Filed a fret. Boom. Magic guitar that is a joy to play… effortless.

sometimes we on guitar forums read too much and think we can fix things that better craftsman should do. I am guilty of that at times, but less so nowadays. Take yours to “your guy” and let him mess with it.

my luthier has told me he had to expensively fix more broken truss rods and DIY stuff from idiots like me… I believe him. And he is t drumming up work; he has long wait times for work.

Wise words!  A good repair guy is usually the best answer.   Unless you’ve got the skills, knowledge, and tools a lot of repairs belong in the hands of a pro.   I can change strings, slightly tweak a truss rod, and glue-down a pick guard, but beyond that I’m better off having it done by a pro.  I suspect that in most situations, a good setup will help make an “okay” guitar a great guitar that you enjoy playing.

lol i cringed when i saw that this was the thread that went off the rails- i just wanted to know about these epiphones!

It’s all good!  This stuff is fun and often leads to places we hadn’t even thought about.

  10. What the hell is this world coming to?  Yesterday evening, I’m in my underwear, relaxing in a recliner, eating Doritos, drinking a can of beer, and watching Duck Dynasty and damn Walmart calls the cops!

I have all my charts on my iPad and iPhone (and computer), but I rarely use them, (last time was when I was in the French Alps and the hotel we stayed had a guitar in the lounge).

Yeah, those lounges with a guitar are cool.  We just got back from The Wisconsin Dels and they had a large common area in the resort we stayed at (Wilderness Resort).  They had an Alvarez there that wasn’t bad and a small sound system.  It’s easy to sound good when you play just five songs that you actually do well…..lol…People think your better than you really are…..At least that’s how it worked for me….lol…lIt was fun.

  12. You did the right thing getting the Standard.  As already suggested, get the one your heart and mind are aimed at.  It’s worth the time and money.  Otherwise, you’ll likely be disappointed.  Most high-dollar instruments ( like Gibson, Martin, Taylor, etc), unless the guitar is a real and obvious  clunker are at least good guitars to begin with.  Then, when purchased by someone who bonds with them, they become great guitars.  All of my Gibsons are great guitars, as far as I’m concerned.  A guitar is a real personal instrument.  If it feels like an extension of who you are it’s likely a great guitar for you.  ……Good luck with your J45 and welcome to the forum.

  13. We had a great time today at my son and daughter-in-law’s house.  Lots of family and friends.   35-40 people.   Three of us played some songs, had lots of ice tea and a couple beers, and mountains of food..  Literally everyone was wearing something patriotic, which I found pretty cool.   The 4th and Christmas are my favorite holidays. ……For me, this is truly an awesome place to live.

Gibson also use to make a  "Hummingbird Pro"  marketed exclusively by/for Guitar Center,  which was no more like a hummingbird than a duck is.   The old Epi H'Bird was nowhere close in sound or feel, just an Asian Copy.  I don't know about the 'new and improved version'  but I doubt it would be comparable to the real thing.   Different wood, body depth - Gibson can call them  Hummingbird pro or studio or wannabe,  but you'll always feel short changed.  My suggestion.  Scour the internet for a used one.    G'Luck.

Exactly!  Lots of pretenders to the throne, but only one queen.

  15. I think it’s the natural grain in the wood.  Looks pretty cool to me.  It’s solid wood, not some perfectly layered and contoured, man-made material.   If you like it, keep it!  If not, send it back and try another.   I hope you eat the guitar you need.
