A couple a years ago when I started downsizing I had three SJ-200's. A standard and two customs, all very nice. The first one to leave was the standard although I liked it better sound wise than the other two because I figured I could always get another standard. Since then I've  moved the two customs. I've been missing the standard so I pre-ordered one of these Elvis SJ-200 Ebony hoping it will at least be equal to the standard I had. It was ordered through Bailey Brothers whom I've been dealing with since way back when one of our member was working there. They've always given me the best deals and the guitars have been great.

Looking-forward to seeing and hearing it on here, Dave.  I have no doubt that it will be awesome……..BTW, since it’s an Elvis model, I think a nice touch would be for you to hang a pair of panties from the headstock.

For those who have never been, it's pretty much across the street from Tootsies and the original Gruhn's location. I've been there many times, bought a bunch of "Stoneman" music there in the day.

Haven't been down in a few years, they tell me it's all changing, Gruhn's is gone, Tootsies is different.

    And so it goes.

It’s all changing.  Including us…..It’s good to remember the “good old days” and realize that for some people that these are the “good old days.”  Sometimes it’s hell to get older, but it beats the alternative.  Don’t know where I’m going with this…lol…I guess the closing-down of this iconic place makes me sad.  Someday, Sun Studios and other legendary places will also be gone.

I saw a photo of a field in France with thousands of govt purchased electric vehicles they abandoned. The battery replacement was approximately 60% of a new electric vehicle.

I think I'll take a Surrey With the Fringe on Top before shelling out $80K for what would cost half that if gas powered. Even with the Federal Govt giving a $7500 'rebate' ,  I would not want a vehicle that lost 40% of it's power when the temperature dipped into the 20s.

Of course a  One Horse Open Sleigh has it's disadvantages too.

Maybe the best alternative is to become Amish and get some real horsepower.

  4. Got my old Gretsch squareneck out today.  Slide is fairly easy with open D tuning (even for me), so, as I await 7-8 inches of snow starting later tonight I’m working on some easy chord shapes for open tuning to mix-in with the slides.    Working-up the courage to take this to one of my gigs.  I know I would be fine with it, but I’m just so damn comfortable with my Gibsons…..But, I do love the sound of a resonator.

  5. Life is so damn unpredictable!  With all the rough roads your family has been on, sure seems like it’s time you get a break.  I hope to God your in-laws are okay and get back home soon…. You and your wife hang in there.   The sun will shine again.

  6. Well, my girlfriend left me.  She said that I’m too “old fashioned.”  Then, two days later I find out she’s been trifling, courtin’ and playing pitch n’ woo with some rambler.

  7. Nice  CALIFORNIAMAN.  Thanks for posting.  Hadn’t heard this before.

I wrote this years ago after losing one of our dogs.

    OLD DOGS
    (G) I have a (Am) friend who is (D7) dying.....(C) known him for (D7)12-years or (G) so.
    (G) 12-years is a (Am) fraction of (D7) my life, but a (C) lifetime as a (D7) dog's life (G) goes.
    (G) We used to (Am) walk in the (D7) evening.  We'd (C) walk for a (D7) mile sometimes (G )more.
Now (G) we barely (Am) leave the (D7) front porch....and he's (C) pulling me (D7)back to the (G) door.
    (C) He used to (D7) bark at strange (G) noises and (C) people that (D7) he didn't (G) know.
Now (C) he just (D7) stares into (G) space.  I (C) doubt that he'll (D7) see the next (G) snow.

    Chorus......
Yes Lord, (C) old dogs are hard to let (G) go of.  They (C) kind of take root in your (G) soul.
    They (C) grow-up inside of your (G) heart....and (D) then you can't let them (G) go.
And (C) Lord, there's just one more (G) thing, (C) that I think you ought to (G) know:
If (C) my old dog ain't up there in (G) heaven, (D) I don't think I want to (G) go.

    (G) Trips to the (Am) vet are more (D7) often.  The (C) vet frowns and (D7) says "He's not (G) good."
    I might have to (Am) make a de(D7)cision.  (C) Lord, I don"t the (D7) know if I (G)could.
At night I (Am) sit on the (D7) sofa and (C)he rests his (D7)head on my (G) knee.
    He stares in(Am)to my (D7)face (C)as if he's trying to (D7)speak to (G)me.
    So (C) I look in(D7)to his (G)eyes.  I (C) hear his jaws (D7) squeak when he (G)yawns.
And (C) I know what (D7) he'd like to (G) say, "Who will (C) take care of (D7) you when I'm (G) gone?"

    Chorus......

The last 4-5 months before I retired I was home based..... I was sitting at my computer each morning at 5 AM, and I sent out a group email asking all my people if they had everything they needed to start the day, (was my way to make sure they were at their work stations and that I was on line).   Was still stressful....so I was anxious to retire.    I was someone's boss from 1972 until I retired in 2020...I told my wife, I don't want to be anybody's boss from now on....she's taken full advantage of that!

Women!  Can’t live with them and can’t live without them.

  9. Not only is a J200 a fantastic guitar, but there are 7,302 different J200 models to pick from (only to be surpassed by the J45 with 7,812 different models)….Seriously, I’ve got a 2020 J200 with a spruce top and mystic rosewood back and sides and it’s has a rumbling, deep bass that really appeals to me..  They call it a Montana Gold.  They can call it whatever they want and use whatever tone woods, etc. they like and the J200 frame still makes for one-hell-of-a-guitar.  ….AND, don’t sweat the talent part.  A guitar like a J200 will literally make you want to play and improve you techniques and ability.  If my talent equaled the quality of my guitars, Roy Clark and Glen Campbell would have wanted to take lessons from me…..Just relax and have fun.

I’m only 58, I have a few more years to go. I didn’t know I was in a chat with a bunch of old men 😂

HELL!  You shouldn’t be in here.  You’re just a kid!

  11. Awesome, Murph!  You’re going to love it.  I’ll be retired 10 years this May.  I’m busier than I’ve ever been, but the difference is that most of what I’m doing is what I don’t mind doing and it’s at a slower pace.  The only thing I’ve found that I don’t like is going to high school reunions and having all these old people asking me if I remember them.

The store did not profit $5500. They had to give Gibson money to get it, so they could sell it. So what, they made $750, I’m guessing. Maybe more maybe less?

I’ve dealt like that with Sweetwater Guitars, Wildwood Guitars, and GC.   I have no idea what they paid for the guitars or made off of them…..just going by the fact that for that much money they shouldn’t sell a guitar that is not exactly what the buyer wants.

I love dogs just don’t want one that can poop a submarine.

You can always by a Bobcat for cleaning the yard….lol……Seriously, I agree with you.   We’ve got a Boston Terrier and a Boston-French Bulldog mix and they’re plenty for me…

I'm guessing string companies have a scientist or two on board with a fancy electronic gizmo that can measure different things on a string when plucked.  And, like the car makers that have machines that open and slam car doors a thousand times to see if they hold up - I bet the string manufacturers also have an automated string plucker.   I'm sure they have graphs and statistics that tell them exactly how long a strings  'good tone'  will last.  Uranium half-life studies, etc.  Certainly the String CEO doesn't let his Marketing guy LIE to us when he says certain strings 'last twice as long.

So -  while they can be scientific,  we cannot.  We are basically alll using different listening devices with a wide range of sensitivities, Trying to remember how a brand of string sounded 3 years ago after a week, a month, a year...  (Sorry 7DayMel).  Did we fingerpick more back then?  Vinegar based BBQ sauce in our pores?   In other words -we are  the very definition of Unscientific.  Can't agree if strings last 2 weeks or 2 years.

So,  since we can't "follow the science"  (problem compounded by using 'Social Media' to report our research findings).  we should all just agree - the world is flat, and change our strings when we 'feel 'like it.   After all, perception is reality.

    Exactly!
