  1. That night train looks very interesting, i live in a condo so the 7 watts would be good..on a bit of a limited budget after my sg 3 purchase...lol, but i will never sell that guitar............. I had a gibson ga 5 , then a crate 30 watt, but the gibson had no headroom at all, the crate you had to crank to loud for here, and then the thing rattled anyway.....leads to me the line 6 spider 4,( i know the hardcore tube people are watching, lol) which i just burned a few songs, rough drafts only, don;t have a way to edit at all. And i am using a tascam dr08, so i loop for 18 seconds on the amp, then play lead over with the recorder....not that techie so it took a bit to burn a cd as its not to friendly with media player, so had to use a windows based program.. rew, is there a place i could move music from a cd to a site ? oh, does the flying v still made with the 496 and 500t, hot pickups...i have the isle of wright hendrix dvd, he smokes on that axe... thanks tom
  2. rew dawg, which amp does that sg 3 seem to like the best, the night train?
  3. mdukem i love natural finish, or nitrocellouse, even the heritage cherry finishs best of all''''I agree with the old fart, natural finish let the guitar breathe, and lets them resonate much better... if you type in " gibson sg 3 " on ebay there is a company that make the volumes, tone harness for the sg 3, price is 145.00, but then you have to get the pickups...don't forget to use a 57 classic plus in the bridge or you will regret it.you can put the 6 way switch in also, which for 40.00 is worth it.. What i decided to do, after listening to advice in this column, is to keep this sg 3,,,,, I may change my sg three to two volume, two tone control (has one now) and put the oil caps in because i love that vintage sound....I can custom orde that from the same company...but have to make sure its wired right or it will be messed up.. thing stopping me is i love the sound on this guitar other then the brightness in the lower e strings.... But the sg 3 is a blues machine, it screams blues with every note....i turn the amp up, the guitar volume down, and get it on the edge of breakup and play for hours....then when you add overdrive its a rock machine. I think the '57" pickup is the best one they make with one exception......lol What if you swapped for the custom, and dis-assembled it and sanded it down, add the 6 way switch, put a natural finish on it, would that be cheaper for you? if it has chunks missing they make a real good filler, mohawk brand, and for deeper scratches the make a hot wax that goes on with a hot knife that is very difficult to spot....but if its all surface marks can you do it your self? tom
  4. mduke22 what did you decide to do????:)
  5. rew ebay has one buy it now 1700.00 no pics yet he will post later.....
  6. forgot to ask you... rew what do you think of trying a bumble cap in the sg 3? there is one on ebay with two volume and two tone controls, and two bumble caps for 145.00,,,,I'd have to drill two holes, but imagine the tonal varities when you could also play the bridge and neck, lower the volume on either, and adjust the tone on both.....i like the tone now except the brightness on the on the b an e strings......i can get such a wide variety of tones.... am i being greedy??? lol tom
  7. rew i wonder if we can get a number because i have only seen two, yours and mine.....and i actually have only seen a couple black.....have to watch ebay though, if you type in " gibson sg custom" if the listing owner used that to list that what you get, as opposed to "gibson sg 3" at one time there were two pages of customs, and not one 2007 sg 3......also, you tube has a few that people show....I was joking about buying another sg 3, although if one fell on my lap for sale it be tough to turn down... GC had sent me a gift card for 35.00 so i had went and bought like 6 sets of strings and paid the tax, so i go back today to swap the ghs strings for pure nickel, first the guys say we don;t have pure nickel, then he goes online and produced a few sets, but then he says the manager says i only get 2.00 per set credit, which was about the tax difference....i said look i ask for pure nickel and they gave me these so its a exchange as opposed to credit, but they wouldn/t exchange, so they did something good and then screwed it up i will never spend any big money at guitar center, they had already annoyed me a few times trying to trade in guitars.....rew do you know what the , if there is, some strings say pure nickel plated, the ghs boomers are "roundwound nickel plated steel"" is that simply nickel on steel? What do you think of putting the bumble be vintage cap in the sg 3? i would like to cut the brightness a little, but afraid i'd ruin what i like about the tone...i just just the guiat tone to tame it down now... hey rew how do you like the epi 's with the dirty fingers pickups? later
  8. rew thats what i said in my first post about the customs going for 3 to 5 k and i think that 3 way switch is for one pickup at a time...these sg's are easily worth twice of what we payed..... The sg 3 faded was ok, but heres a couple things i had trouble with....the bridge pickup seemed a little weak no matter how much i tweaked it. it had flat response also...then the 490's have a certain shrill when overdriven at times....and mine would have to be tuned every day, not a big deal but made me think about why..... One of the things i like about the 57's is clean they have that real nice grainy brown gibson tone....if you get them right on the edge of breakup, they are real sweet in the bridge, ,kick in the bridge middle p/u and it softens the tone and adds a glossy sound,,,,i haven't played the middle and neck much at all, lol maybe i'll put a push pull to activate all three at once and then i'll get in the rock and roll hall of fame....lol one on ebay now at 750 in canada, and i think i may need a extra, lol..... regards tom
  9. Rew thats the same one i have i have to get some pictures....I am the second owner but it was a closet guitar a drummer bought new and never played....mine has one slight nick, but other then that its like new....mine was 1000 and so many tried to low ball him after i inspected and played it i forked it over...total time, 6.5 minutes.lol..but you got a good deal, these are the best, the best sg's i think.....they play better then guitars that are thousands more..... rew what strings are you using, and is it a little bright.....they say the pure nickel strings work well, and i have 3 pack i was gonna exchange, but have not yet.... Also, do you think i overstate the quality and range of tones you can get on this model sg 3?
  10. mduke, i personally would not make that trade, but am not sure what year the standard is, but i notice standard prices for slightly older model are real high, esp. in good condition. And i think as you may know the customs are overrated....don't forget, gibson 's bread and butter used to be the standards and customs before the custom shop stuff came along, and i believe the older standards are higher quality then the ones released today... The sg you have, i thought you said the body was routed to fit the humbuckers, i think thats gonna be to expensive to do that project.... if your really lusting for the sg 3 with the 57's sneak a bid on the one on ebay, at 670 right now, US, actually in canada, and put in a max bid that you would pay, if you have a dough.....then sell the other sg 3 if you need to.....you will never reget buying that guitar, long as its a good one, and i think it is,,,,the guys really seems pretty anal about the condition which is good...lol to be honest, since i bought the sg three i sold my g & l , sold the faded sg 3, and don't play the lp much at all.... its a really fine design, get some nice cleans, and some raging overdrive, even country sounds..lol .....the pickups are bright so i am gonna try pure nickel strings next....I played on just the bridge pickup for the last few days, lol, the 57 classic plus is a beast... As far as that stain take it to a expert, i work with wood at times and certain strong solvents can remove certain stains, but, it can also destroy the finish if the guy is not a expert.....or just play it........... .peace....tom
  11. The gibson sg 3 heritage cherry was 1600 in 2007.....Personally i have never played a sg3 single coil, and i understand the faded are les expensive to make and cost less.. You can change over the pickups if you really like everything else about that guitar, but the 57's are not cheap as you know, and the 6 way switch if you want that is about 40...The bridge is a 57 classic plus. Or, there is a ebony sg 3 with the pups on ebay right now is at 500. Its also in canada.. now i believe as i said before that these with the chicken head 6 way switchs are under valued, and will be worth more later....The two on ebay now are the first i have seen in a while, since i have been looking...I think if you can get a near mint one for 1000 (us) or under you will never regret it.... but you can always get a gibson sg custom, or a sg 3 like yours on ebay... That doesn't mean they are not good, means less demand , more product. The sg customs are very much like the sg 3, mine, but the 3 way switch does not work for most people. So why does the sg custom which is almost the exact same guitar as mine, except for a little inlay, and the switch, cost thousands more?....because there is a percieved value, but it also a clue as to why gibson stopped making the sg 3 like mine, they were cutting out a big profit line...the customs There is another guitar simular to this sitituation, the les paul vintage mahogney studio....i paid 699 for that guitar, faded cherry, but every part on it is the same as the les paul standard...The only difference is the binding which does not affect tone,, and the maple cap (affects tone) and finish...The vm is actually a hollow body electric, which keeps the bb pros a little darker. and is actually based on a black beauty design gibson said... Gibson sold them like that, but now jacked up the price and lines them up with the regular studios, which is another fine guitar...and they are priced very well for what you get....
  12. The 57's sound real nice duke... anyone that likes a sg, really should try one with the chicken head style swith......i have a spider 4 75 watt and the 57s are very powerful, i can give my self a nose bleed with it, lol... the 57's tend to be bright but can tame that with tone and amp tones controls...i may put the better bumble bee caps on it if i keep it.... i did order the sg faded and should have it today or tommorow, then i have to make decision if i am going to sell the other sg 3 or eat corn flakes for dinner for 3 months...lol the guy i bought this from had one of yours mint for 500 u.s., but i been looking for two years for a mint one so i grabbed the sg3. The ebony one like mine is on ebay for 1200 (us) buy it now,,,,but the red ones seem to be more rare, and mine is like a new guitar, thats why i i think its worth more then the others....condition is key with the hardcore collectors, unless its real vintage then they may make exceptions...if all factory parts.... now, the 490's i think are good, and to me if i hear a sound close to what i want i will tweak for a few weeks , and usually i can get there if i am close....you could try local craigs lists to trade, but alot of bullshitters there, maybe better to wait for a sg 3 to come to your shop, and sell yours or trade if you can get most of your money back...i am kinda stuck on humbuckers right now......you also may try noise reduction, or some type of processor to get the sg to tame down...
  13. yes the sg 3 with the humbuckers, not faded, ran about 1700.00 new i believe, the faded are on u ebay for between 400 to 1200, 490 p/u's, and they are a great deal if you can get one for even 600....if you did the math for the pickups, tuners , switch and bridge and tail piece, you'll see to just buy thoses parts is not cheap, and you don't have any wood yet to hook them to. the one you have is 500 to 1000 from what i see.. the sg 3 i listed i have the link to is alot like the custom, but better...it has the 6 way switch the custom has a 3 way. the custom has a ebony fretboard, but the classic pickups are already bright...the sg 3 haS rosewood. the custom has a little more inlay, but not much. my point was the sg 3 i linked above is a fantasic value, if you can get one...the one i have i will put up against any sg 3 custom for tone...and its cheaper thats why they only made them a year....they would have killed the sg 3 custom market if they kept making them..but the variety of tones is just unreal.. later
  14. The other thing is the ""57"" pickups are a little bright, which i can tame down but then i loose the beefy punch while doing that.. The faded has the 490 pickups which i also have used and like ..... ..Zappa plays a sg in muffin man if you look on utube.....lol, he does a nice lead on it...
  15. thanks , they did list one on ebay for 1200.00 but its beat up pretty good...and its the black one, i have the red.. this one has all the gold plate intact no tarnish, and two very tiny marks... The sound i am looking for is with two of the pups overdriven, almost like a martin barre, jethro tull sound.. The les paul s don't drive both at full power the way the chicken head knob does the trick.... thanks again
  16. hello all, Started this as a conversation place for all " sg 3 " and sg custom owners, or others to post, ask questions, or get information from the other members here..... just bought a gibson sg 3, and its a heritage cherry like the following picture with a 6 way chicken head knob. Its in really mint condition....i bought it to do studio work but its like a museum piece and thinking i may sell it, pocket some cash, buy another or the faded version of this one... I believe they made these for one year (2007), and i looked on ebay but don't see any cherry ones, but a few ebony......Have tried to find out how many were made but have been able to get a number yet.... This is better then the sg custom because it has the 6 way chicken head with the ""57"" classic and classic plus pickups. This guitar is the bomb............lots of different sounds....One of the best gibsons ever made....The "57"s are really great pickups. Question is how can i determine its value, i looked around online and don't see any information on it...heres the link its the cherry one here...thanks for any help.... Update....I will never sell this guitar...lol http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RblgtZYcNWs
  17. looking at a gibson sg 3 with serial number 034570471... how can i quickly find out if its a real gibson, i have to look at it today.. he wants 1000.00 for it , its the hertiage red model....thanks
  18. i had a jb and 1959 in a special i had and they seem alot tamer, less treble, but also less overdrive..they seem to have a flat response compared to any gibson pickup i tried.. What i like about the BB is you can tame them down by lowering them down a bit and balancing the two pickups, then use the volumes to trim.......peace
