3piph0n3
I'm helping a friend touch up his guitar after a headstock repair. There is a small crack going along the back of the neck that has been patched and sanded with Elmer's wood putty. I was thinking of using duplicolor paint then minwax polyeruthane gloss. Is this a good choice? Will there be any unwanted reaction with the duplicolor and poly? The guitar is a black Epiphone dot. I don't want to refinish the entire headstock, do you think this will blend well with the existing finish? Thank you!!
6string
I've never done a refin or touch-up with poly, always nitro. It's much easier to work with. I really don't know how poly would turn out, but would love to see some pics when you're done.
3piph0n3
I read somewhere that Epiphone guitars had poly finishes and the best way to blend is to stay consistent…poly with poly, nitro with nitro. I can be completely wrong and I am open to advice/opinions. I've been doing a lot of reading and came across the DIY thread on this forum and saw some good results with duplicolor. The guitar is at my friend's house so I cannot take any pictures at the moment, but I will try to when we're all done.
6string
I agree on using like compounds, but I've never used poly. I've stripped poly completely and refinished with nitro. Here's a thread where I stripped a couple poly Strats and refinished with nitro… Strat Refin
6string
I recently purchased an Epi LP Special I with a broken neck and repaired it. I'ts not bothering me so I haven't been to quick to address the finish on the repaired area. My plan, if I ever get around to it, is to strip the poly finish off the whole neck and refinish with nitro. If I do, I'll do the body too. Maybe this would be a good project for a turquoise finish. 3piph0n3
That's not a bad idea, I think a turquoise finish would look awesome!
retrorod
So....can we assume that all Epi finishes from 1999 on are Poly and not Nitro? Thanks, Rod
vomer
As far as I'm aware all Epis made since the change of production from the USA to Japan in 1969/70 have had non-nitro finishes, including the Elite/Elitist models. If I'm wrong and there are any with nitro someone will be along shortly to let us know.
