looking for Epiphone model designation

You are correct, lucille64 --- it is a "pre-Joe Pass" Emperor built in the Korean Samick factory. The Joe Pass version was introduced in 1994, and included Joe's signature on the pickguard as well as a "Joe Pass" truss rod cover. Not many of these had the pickup selector on the treble bout; it was moved to the bass side to more closely match Joe's ES-175.

There is some confusion about the Emperor/Emperor II designation, as there was a 17" Emperor built by Matsumoku in the 80's, which was much like an Elitist Broadway in shape, features and appointments. The smaller 16" Emperor was often referred to as the Emperor II even before Joe Pass' endorsement to differentiate it from its larger stablemate.
