bindings Posted May 26, 2014 Posted May 26, 2014 Anybody know the history about that? Most of the 1961 SG reissues have pointy end, near the body cutout. But, there are some REISSUES that have a pickguard that is 1/2 inch shorter and less pointy near the cutout. There must be an interesting story behind that ! Any help greatly appreciated ! UPDATED ! For REPLY !

Photos, of what you're questioning, would be helpful. It may simply be a difference in year of manufacture, OR...the difference between a Custom Shop version, and a Gibson USA version? Are the headstocks the same, or does one have a more "squared" less flared version at the top? The Custom Shop versions, have the more squared headstock shape, which is more like the original '61 Les Paul (SG). The Gibson USA versions have a slightly wider, more flared to shaper tips, on the headstock's upper bout. So, the pickguards, too, "could" differ slightly to reflect the slight specification differences, in CS or USA versions. CB

charlie brown Posted July 31, 2014 Posted July 31, 2014 Charlie Brown ! Here is photos Sorry for big delay ! Well, the one thing I wonder now, is if they were made slightly different, to fit slightly different body beveling, in the forward lower bout?! Is there (also) a slight difference, in the space between pickup cutouts? I can't tell for sure, but one (on the right) looks very slightly narrower. ??? Just checked the Gibson website, and there IS a difference, between the USA versions, and the Custom Shop version. The CS has the longer tip. Mounted on the guitar, it's not all that noticeable, unless you really look for it! So, the one on your left, would (most likely) be the "Historic" correct version, the one on the right, would be more like the current Gibson USA models. Keep in mind, though, there were (and, still are) some slight variations, batch to batch. Even (maybe especially) back in the '60's, when they were not laser cut, or computer spec'd, and stamped/cut out. CB
