Seeking Information about Epiphone Emperor II

GuitarC

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Recently purchased the below Epiphone Emperor II guitar from a local pawn shop and am trying to determine what year it was made and anything thing else about this guitar. In researching the web I find a lot of Joe Pass Emperor II's that apparently (at least in 1 online source) replaced the "regular" Emperor II in 1995. That being said, this one has NO "Joe Pass" markings on the pick guard, truss rod cover, or anywhere else. Logic would suggest that this dates this guitar pre-1995 however the 1994 and earlier models I've seen pictures of have different tailpieces. Made in Korea. Serial number is S5036695. Any information on what I have here would be most appreciated! THANKS! Rick

according to one source...

that serial #,,

Your guitar was made at the

Samick Plant, Korea

on March, 1985,1995 or 2005

Production Number: 6695

LOL! gotta love Guitar dater!

All the Emperor II's, both Joe Pass and otherwise, have had that same tailpiece. There were some Matsumoku-made Emperors with Frequensators or L-5 style tailpieces, but those are 17" archtops more like the Broadway than the Emperor II. The "Joe Pass" signature could have been removed from the pickguard --- quite a few players did that. Most of the pre-Joe Pass Emperor II's had the pickup selector switch on the cutaway horn, but there were a few interim models like yours as well.

The serial number clearly identifies it as a Samick made in 1995.
