The screws on the buttons adjusted the tension on the rotomatics from my 2008 J-50. Try loosening it slightly.

If you want to replace the rotomatics, there should be no need to enlarge the holes, it's the opposite problem. The rotomatics have larger holes than "vintage style" tuners. But there are some inexpensive bushings that will adapt them: http://www.stewmac.com/Hardware_and_Parts/Tuning_Machines/Tuner_Parts/3_8_Conversion_Tuner_Bushing.html

When I replaced my Rotomatics, the bigger problem was the marks that the washers left on the headstock. These required sanding and polishing to remove and it was a little tricky. To see how much of an issue this might be, remove just one of the rotomatics and see how much of a "bullseye" there is around the hole.
