brundaddy
There are a number of Gibson models that are only sold in Japan. It's a mysterious scenario that I'm not very familiar with, but this may have something to do with it.
TommyK
If memory serves me, and sometimes it don't. Orville branded guit tars were not originally made by Gibson. They looked pretty much.. naw.. exactly like the one before you now. A lawsuit ensued and the makers of 'Orville' were ordered to cease and desist. Somewhen in the mix Gibson ended up owning the company that were making the Gibson copies, except for the name. Gibson decided to maintain production of the erstwhile knock-offs. In fact they were so good a copy, many Gibson lovers say they were as good or better than a made in Kalamazoo Gibson. Primarily, Orvilles were only marketed in Japan as that is where they were selling. Some have made their way to the states, but not by the efforts of Gibson and company. Not sure if they are still made though.
