albertjohn
I've been following a couple of discussions on the Hollwbody forum about swapping Grover kidneys for tulips. Apparently Grover amongst others make tulip shaped tuners which do not require any additionall drilling to fit. I'm very tempted to change them on my 335. So, what about the Songwriter? The current top model had gold metal tulip shaped tuners which I'm not sure about. I like the traditional green coloured ones best. The current tuners are gold Grovers which work perfectly and are particularly stable. Any views?
G McBride
I guess that is a personal choice but why would you want to mess with perfection?
jeff5341
I put a set of Grover tulip tuners on my Songwriter several months ago. They work well and I think they look much better than the gold Grovers, I just never liked gold tuners.

Which ones did you use and did you have to drill new holes? Any pictures Jeff?
Matt the Cat
Hi aj I swapped out the 'kidney' grovers that came on my Epi 'Bird for a set of 'keystone' grovers. Identical tuners, just different shaped buttons so no need for different holes or extra screws. Got them here http://www.guitarpartsresource.com/tuners_groverroto.htm I much prefer the look and personally think your songwriter would look super-cool with a gold set. Go for it! All the best, Matt

I do agree about the gold but I've always been a fan of the vintage green ones. Not too sure how that would sit with the blinged up modern look of the Songwriter though. djeffcoat
I replaced the gold Grover buttons on my Songwriter Deluxe Cutaway with ebony buttons. It took some weight off the headstock. DJ
jeff5341
AJ I used the Grover Deluxe Keystones nickel finish item # 3754 at StewMac. These tuners have 2 screws each so you have to drill a new hole for the top screw. On mine at least, the existing hole from the original Grover's was about 4 mm off so I had to plug the original holes and redrill for the new tuners, it isn't nearly as bad it sounds. All told it took me about 30 minutes to do the job. Sorry I don't have any pics at the moment.
