Towser83
Hi everybody, I was recently looking at some SG's in classified ads and there are a few I want to try out. The thing is I've noticed modern SG and SG Specials seem to have rather thick necks. I can deal with it but I prefer slimmer 60s les paul style necks. I was just wondering whether there has been any change in the SG necks in recent years? There's a standard from 2003 and another from 2004, are these really the same neck as the ones around now with the 50s style chunky neck? Thanks. Blackie
Necks vary so much even sometimes on the same models it is best to try and play whatever it is,
Dub-T-123
The Standards will have a thicker neck generally. If you want a thinner '60s neck then you should look at the '61 reissue.

If only I had the money! haha. Thanks though, that is a help.
Dub-T-123
No problem buddy glad I could help You can probably find a great deal on a used '61. I'm a huge fan of the Standard. I love the neck on mine but I love the slim '60s neck too. I'll have both eventually.
Dinosauria
I'd also recommend the '61, though even some that are listed as '50s round profile can be really comfortable to play. It really depends on the shaping. It took me a long time to find the Special I was looking for (I too prefer slimmer necks) but it was worth the time and effort. Dub-T-123
My neck preference lies mainly in the width of the neck/ fretboard. I love a nice narrow neck whether it's slim or thick. Of course, if it's too narrow it makes it more difficult to put your fingers on it so it can't be super narrow.
