NeoConMan
Does your Strat have a humbucker at the bridge? If so, can you split the coils? I never paid much attention to them, I was busy building my own Strats the way I wanted them. EDIT: I found this after doing a little research; www.fender.com/features/s1/pdf/AmericanStratHSS011-7000.pdf Looks like there's no ability to tap the bridge humbucker all by itself. That's how you get the Tele "spank" out of a Strat - sorta - though I suppose I could live without it. I just assumed (there's that word....) that it was part of the control scheme. What with Fender advertising and bragging about how comprehensive and versatile it was... Looks like with the button up, the most popular middle/bridge single coil position still exists. That's what I use 90% of the time anyway, with the pickup selector at the #4 position.
Thin_Lizzy
The great thing about Strats is they're just tools, nothing special about them but they do the job nicely. The Gibsons are things of beauty and come out on special occasions.
NeoConMan
Yeah, I dunno... I love my Gibsons but I don't hold such a single-brand cavalier attitude about them. Strats, Teles, and a few other Fenders were more plentiful than the Gibsons were in the 50's and 60's. In the Rock/Blues world I live in, they were much more common until the seventies. They've been used to make some incredible music that might not have been possible on a different guitar. And considering the price for a good American Strat, there's no reason not to have one in your arsenal. That being said, which ones do I get most nervous about at a gig? Gibsons, hands down!
